sound card recommendations?

I have a pretty decent PC running with Vegas on it, but my sound card is broken I guess, and since I can't figure out what's up with it and it may be an actual hardware issue, I am thinking maybe I should just get a new sound card if I can't get it working this weekend. I don't do anything heavy audio-wise, mostly syncing up audio tracks to video tracks sort of thing, do I need any decent sound card, or is a $99 audigy or whatever ok? Any suggestions?

Re: sound card recommendations?

Thanks all! I went with one of the cheaper Audigys. I actually previously had a nice M-Audio Delta44, but it's stopped working, the card itself is broken, which maybe isn't typical, but sucks. I'll be mailing it back to them soon!

Re: sound card recommendations?

The Audigy 2 rocks. It's inexpensive, does full surround-sound. Combined with DVD Architect and it's AC-3 surround-encoder, and the Creative THX 6.1 speakers, you'd have everything you need on the cheap to do a surround-sound soundtrack! Plus the Audigy 2 includes a firewire port, if your computer doesn't already have one.

Re: sound card recommendations?

If you get the Audigy 2 Platinum, you also get a 5.25 bay with a full panoply of digital and analog (audio) inputs, front-mounted on your computer, plus another Firewire port.

And all the Audigy 2 cards come with a pretty excellent suite of software (not to mention some surround-sound games) for recording and manipulating sound in all sorts of interesting ways, including adding atmospheric effects. Want to change a singer's voice from male to female? It's not airtight, but it is pretty cool.

There's a bank of software sound effects, too, meant to be "played" on a MIDI keyboard, but you can click the gui keyboard with your mouse to produce them, as well. Crashes, bullets, trains, sirens -- all the stuff you might expect.

I don't have the 6.1 speaker set (I have no idea where I'd put the rear surround speaker), but the card works GREAT for 5.1 surround. The card and Vegas were MEANT for each other.

A caveat -- as cool as they look, those retro THX Klipsch Promedia speakers aren't a good choice for the card. They have no analog inputs, and because of it, you can't use the card's Dolby Digital decoder with them.
