Sound Card for MacPro

Grace is choice gear if you have the scratch for it, used to have 8ch pre-amp back in the day and it was absolutely crystal.

I know you are correct with the Digi /Apple issues (I have had Digi gear since 92' when it was 4 track only ) ,

however we need to look at what the OP is asking for. for a simple solid solution to get nice balanced outs with some really decent pre-amps with a bit of options the Mbox is hard to beat, With both of my machines the Core audio drivers have no problem operating as the 2 channel in and out instead of what the computer built in stuff. and you get PT LE in the mix.

Cheers.

Actually from his original post
I am looking for a PCI sound card for my Newhalem MacPro. This card would run my powered monitors primarily, but having midi is a nice bonus. I probably would not record through this device so pre-amps aren't important.

I also go back to the Sound Tools days.... dem younsters just got a blank look...

The Mbox is not a bad deal ,but the OP needs outputs, doesn't care about inputs, wants MIDI, and was pretty adamant about not wanting ProTools and want's it to work well with unnamed non Digi software.

With that in mind I don't think the mBox is the best choice for him.

I have advocated for Digi and PT in the past when I though it fit the users needs but this IMHO is not one of those times.

I have the Saffire Pro 40 and got it for under $300... Great box with a bunch of IN/OUTS. Probably going to go with RME in a few years.

I will have to disagree Noiz, no disrespect.

Mbox 2 has balanced outs controlled by a separate knob than headphone outs which has its own volume knob, entirely satisfying his output requirements.

The Mbox also has MIDI which is one of his requirements.

The OP as I just re-read the entire thread never held the position that he adamantly wanted to stay away from PT or Digi. if I missed that I apologize.

I do understand that he had worries about it not playing well with others, which is where I witnessed my experience and reported that on both mac and PC I have NOT had any issues with the interface having issues with any software that I have experienced. And I still believe this interface gives him the best quality for the buck.

Cheers.

One of the things I love about the Audio Board is how an itty-bitty little question can bloom into, well a thread like this. For now, I am Apple all the way; fcp + logic, no protools in my future. Since I'm not using my Traveler in any significant way, I thought I would get something to drive my monitors, sell the traveller and get a new toy. I thought a simple pcie card would do the trick, but it would seem there aren't any inexpensive options for the Mac. Fast forward to modestly priced usb or fw interfaces around $200. At about $250, I would choose something besides by Avid product since at that price point, I might just keep my Traveller.

Well damn! I apologize, it's been awhile since I looked at my Mbox2 and you are right it does have MIDI.

Adamant was probably too strong a word, he wasn't interested in PT.

No disrespect taken. We are not all that far apart. I would shy away from Avid because I have had compatibility issues in the past with Digi and don't trust that that won't be an issue in the future. Especially considering they are orphaning a lot of hardware with the next version of PT. And you lean toward Avid and aren't worried about compatibility.
Compatibility aside both options can be had at around the same price and both will work. Exactly which is the bigger "bang for the buck" mostly comes down to what you get with the box (that you want) and what discounts you can snag.

At the two channel level Avid is a lot closer to it's competition.

Thinking a bit more about Avid, they have been bleeding red ink for several years and just recently go significantly smaller via a large layoff. I'm not saying they are going under, but they could be a significantly different company by the end of the year.
