Sorting through clips

I'm new to Premiere Pro and NLEs in general. I have a bunch of video files that I need to go through and find useful footage. I could do this manually and just write down filenames and time brackets but I figure there's probably a good way to do this in Premiere. I'm not sure if there's a term for this that I could search for in google. Anybody know of a tutorial/video/book/etc that talks about this?

You can "log" your footage many ways. A paper log is one way.You can also use the Description and Comment columns in the roject Bn Window. o can also pull clips from your footage into a "selects" reel (Timeline/sequence). Timecode is your friend in paper logs as well as well set up and planned projects. MAnge the Data na dthe project because they can get out of control easilyl

As shooter said, there's many ways of doing it, it's about picking one which works for you.

I've had a copy of Prelude installed on my system since CS6 came out which I have never fired up, but I'm pretty sure it's designed to help with this sort of thing. If you have the a suite with Prelude included, it might be worth checking out it's capabilities and how it could be of use to you.

One tip is that inside Premiere when using markers, add plenty of comments - such as dialogue snippets, labels or keywords. I find comments more effective than marker names because only comments appear in the Markers tab (allowing you to easily glance through looking for a certain word).

And especially if you're working on a complex project with a lot of footage to sort, it's hard to beat a good old fashioned paper log!
