sorrenson egg effect

I recently got some high res ( 50 mb) Nassa maps of our good ship earth. I have used them in my never ending quest to model 3d clips of the earth that look believable. The renders are the best I've done yet in 3d max. So...I render them to QT files and play them in Premiere and they're perfect! Next, I compress then using Sorrenson and they get elongated vertically or compressed horizontally so the earth takes on an egg shape...Anyone know why? I have compressed to every format; QT, WMV, MPEG4 and all come out like eggs! go figure.....:undecided

Have you checked your pixel ratios? ie. A square pixel going to a 0.9 or vice versa is enough to change circles to elipses.

everything is right down the line until Sorrenson compresses it. If I export it from premiere as a microsoft DV AVI or QT MOV file, the earth is round as a ball. So...Is there a setting in sorrenson to adjust pixel ratio, or did I not quite understand Craig:)

If you're using the DV format anywhere along the line, aspect ratio is the issue!

Are any of your files 720X480?

Could it be then the fact that the renders out of 3dmax are QT using the animation setting? I'm now thinking that setting uses square pixles instead of nines! Is this correct? This would cause the stretching grief?

You guy's rock....That was the issue, funny how it didn't show up till compression time. Once again thanks:beer:

Mino - Can you explain what needs to be done (like I'm a 3 yr old)? I've been trying to make some widescreen projects and everything looks fine, until I take it into Sorenson, then it looks stretched and there's no settings in Sorenson to fix it.

Thanks!

Firstly, codecs in an of themselves have nothing to do with aspect ratios of either screen or pixels.

Two things will change the way your image looks.

1. Changing the aspect ratio of the screen. ie. 16:9 is output as 4:3
2. Changing the aspect ratio of the pixels ie. Rendering with square pixels to a any format, be it MPEG4 or WMV and then taking that file and recompressing to something like NTSC/DV which by default has a pixel aspect ratio of 0.9.

Its going through the change in any direction that causes the shift.

So what is the pixel aspect ratio setting for your project in Premiere? Make sure it matches in Soreson. Yes you can specify in Sorenson for some of the codecs the pixel aspect ratio. Make sure its not simply that you're changing screen aspect ratios.

I have a widesreen project (1.2) and I output as a DV AVI (1.2). It looks great! In Sorenson it appears stretched and outputs stretched in all formats (mov, wmv, etc.)

Thanks Craig!

Hey PK.....Now have a seat and I'll get you some lovely cookies and milk, by the way, it's almodt time for Mr. Dressup!.....So much for the 3 year old stuff.....I don't know about your problem or if it's related to square pixels. but my downfall was rendering an animation in 3d studio max out as a qt file using the animation setting. In the render preset box is a setting among 2 gazillion others that sets the pixel aspect. I had not changed it and it seems to default to 1.0 which I'm assuming is the equivelant of square pixels. After setting it to 0.9 I was able to compress rendered qt using Sorrenson and not get the tubular earth look. As I said I don't know if that applies to your scene, though it doesn't sound like it.
