Want to go from FCP - 8 min video to web using SS. Anyone know how to get a good high quality way to export and a small file size at the same time...like the trailers on Apples movie trailer site?

Two things. In your post you mentioned format and using a SS, (Streaming Server).

Apple's movie trailer site uses "http" streaming and the Sorenson Video 3 Codec. You must also hint your movie to avoid it completely downloading before it play. No streaming server is needed for "http" streaming.

Streaming servers use "rtsp" streaming. This allows someone to scrub down the timeline and commence streaming from the release point. (ie. It will start streaming from that location.) You also should hint movie.

The full Sorenson Squeeze 4.1 Compression Suite has the Pro version of the Sorenson 3 Codec and every other format you might want to work with. The Pro version of QuickTime will let you export using Sorenson 3 regular single pass version. When you apply hinting in QuickTime Pro, don't forget to open the hinted movie and enable the hinted tracks as well. The default is for the hinted tracks to be off.

MPEG 4 compression can also bring file size on disk down quite a bit, but if your streaming, bit rates and width/height sizes are more significant than file size on disk.

You can just use one of the Quicktime presets in Squeeze. 512k_Streaming or 1Mbps_Streaming, they work great.

Oooops!

Oooops!

Its always the simple things that get overlooked. SS as Streaming Server acronymn has just been so ingrained that the simple, and now obvious new context connection never made it across the corpus collosum.

Bad brain. Bad bad brain.

Mmmmmmmm.. beeer!
