Sopranos Shoot

OMFG!

craziest thing tonite yo!!!

I was comin back from the weight room and near a park behind my house there were like 5 biiiig ass 16 wheeler trucks and stuff...and i see them unloading lights...so then i go outside...and i started talking to this dude with a super heavy Jersey accent...he told me they were filming a scene for season 6 of the Sopranos...i was like...WOAHH!

then at this trailer..i see that guy James Gandolfini walk out in a suit. It was madd cool. Then iwalked over to this car...they had such a sweett set up of a rig..its like crazy...half the car was covered in metal pipes and stands with a light in the front. I was studying how they put the rig on..so many ropes and stuff.

Then i see behind the car...a real 35mm camera..Panavision rolls and everything...ive never seen one up close in real life before. I was like....if only no one was watching...id snatch that thing soo fast...forget about getting a DVX...thats all i would be thinkin on the way home. lol

Then they had like 6 boxes of different lenses sitting around from like 12mm to 200mm it was cool. Then this dude that puts the camera together and loads the film walked up to me..i was talkin to him..he was madd chill. I saw how the camera gets loaded..looks complicated. Then he was putting on a Matte box on there then they clipped on a 50mm lens...and then i ask the guy...IS IT HEAVY?!?!...he then picks it up...starts groaning...hell yeahh kid!...then he walks over to the car and puts the camera on the side window.

Then about 3 hours later..they start shooting...and Gandolfini is sitting in the car lookin madd weird. And i got like literally 3 feet away from the producers and directors...the producers are a tad fruity..well...super fruity...and the director was some woman. Then I was watchin in those biig preview monitors...side by side...watchin Gandolfini. After like 30 takes..i got madd cold..then went home.

the end.

Sweet story, I would love to see a sopranoes shoot. On a similar note, I was walking home from school the other day and saw many big white 16 wheelers. Trucks with Arri lights too. I checked it out, and they were shooing "hook," and that all the information I could get from the crew.

That's a funny thread. When I was in high-school, we used to skip classes and go trolling around LA looking for production trucks lined up in the streets. If you mind yourself and are respectful of what they're trying to accomplish, you'll find that crew members on location will often be accommodating and helpful.

If they're in one of their many downtime moments, my experience was that they loved talking about their work. I was never interested in the talent - more in talking with the below-the-line crew about what they did and the gear at-hand.

I think Lords of Dogtown director, Catherine Hardwicke, was slated to shoot an episode in S6 - that might've been her that you saw. They've had a good deal of celebrity directors at the helm in past seasons.

You should go hang out - the camera crew would likely be happy to let a young, aspiring filmmaker with his own 24p camera hang out for a while.

Yea but, I'm not sure if their gonna be there tomorrow...they started filming at 10:15..and prolly arent gonna finish till later.

It wasnt Catherine Hardwicke...it was some woman with brown hair.....i kno its a very good description...but yeah. lol

I was trying to hang out near the car..bout 20 feet away..and this guy comes up to me..hes like...are you part of the crew? I was like..naahhh im here from the local film school gaining production knowledge.*btw there isnt any film school around here.*...then the guy is like...well, keep away from this area...but he sounded like an ass.

but the dude I was talkin to that was putting the camera together was madd cool...i was like..yeahh ive never seen one in real life..they are madd cool...hes like..yeah i know its fun to mess around with them when your bored...and he started talkin more about how he got in the business...he worked at a tv studio and one day a film producer was looking for technical people..and he got hired...WHAT LUCK!!

I met a camera operator. He was super cool...he showd me how to hook up the camera to the rig....even though i had no clue how to do it..cuz theres like 5030897 different screws to screw into. And Gandolfini was sitting in the car then the dude walked away...and i kinda glanced around....and looked through the eye piece...mann wat clarity in those lenses...its amazing!..suggestion to you all..buy a 35mm camera and get alot of different lenses...super good quality.

But i dont think it was one of their downtime moments..because there was a lot of people running in different directions like chickens with out heads...and like these young like 19 year olds with headsets and handling coffee to people. Some people were asses..some chill...but overall...i learned alot bout DOF, angles, lighting especially..since it was dark, and how Gandolfini has a tendancy to keep scratching his belly every 2 seconds when hes in a car.

Hmm, let me get my credit card out of my Ferrari Enzo.... :)

That's rad. Sounds like a much cooler crew than the time Nike came to my HS to shoot a commercial. I ducked out of class to see what was going down, and they had security guards that wouldn't even let me get 100yds from the set. It was lame. They had a pretty rad setup though...And then the other day downtown, I saw the set of a bowflex commercial LOL.

No joke... anyone have a half million i can have? That, and the fact you can't even BUY a panavision.. you have to rent them

Kai,

This is true, but you can buy the set of Cookes or ZSS they have stuck to the front of it - unless, of course, they're Panavised. Now that I've thought about those matched Cooke T2 S4s, I think I need a hankie.

Those Panavision rolls are freakin heavy as hell...the dude loading the camera up asked me to get this like all steel suitcase...i opened it..and there was the roll of film...i picked it up...it felt like i was holding bricks or something.

Next time you do up a resume, don't forget to put down that you were a loader on a Sopranos shoot.

that sounds tight, sounds like you had fun. I had an experience like that but I wasnt sure of what they were shooting, what it was for and wasnt that close to the director and monitors and stuff. but It was still cool I got to watch them prep everything and shoot It was on the backlot of universal studios and thats when I also saw paris hilton.
