Sony's Noise Reduction

Any of you know any good links on how to use Sony's Sound Forge and the plugin Noise Reduction?

Thanks

Re: Sony's Noise Reduction

I've got Sound Forge 7, but I don't see a plug-in named Noise Reduction.

Re: Sony's Noise Reduction

Ooops....never mind. I just went to the Sony website and now I see it is a series of 4 plugins for Soundforge. I thought that those were now included with SF 7, but I was wrong.

I remember them when they were offered by Sonic Foundry. Too high priced for me. I don't plan on "restoring vinyl recordings" in the near future. ;D

Re: Sony's Noise Reduction

Someone told me to check out creativelab.net for those tutorials but when i go to thant link I don't get any website about that stuff.

Hmmm.

Re: Sony's Noise Reduction

Sony's dealers have a deal going now where if you buy Sound Forge, you get Noise Reduction for free.

Tehre are also 3 tutorials on the use of NR on the VASST site. I wish this site could host some of our tutorials, I'd quit pointing people there.

Re: Sony's Noise Reduction

Ya, I found one on that site . it's called the art of noise reduction, I read over and over, still doens't tell me much.

Re: Sony's Noise Reduction

That's an article, not a tutorial. Specifically what do you want to know?

1.How to remove the hiss from the sound.

and

2.Dogs barking in the background on one clip.

Re: Sony's Noise Reduction

First, if the dogs are barking during speech, you'll not get rid of them, simple as that.

Are you losing the hiss in Vegas, or do you have Sound Forge? I should have asked that in the previous post. Process is somewhat different for the two apps.

Re: Sony's Noise Reduction

When I play the video clips on preview in Vegas there is a hiss, mostly in the master and medium shots, the close up shots are fine, and I'm going to use that audio for the other clips which have the hiss but for some clips I don't have close up audio so I need to fix those master shot audio, the hissing.

I do have Vegas, and Sound Forge with the Noise Reduction plugin.

Re: Sony's Noise Reduction

I'd use Forge for this.
Open your avi in Vegas.
Right click the audio file, choose OPEN COPY IN SOUND FORGE
In Forge, drill in deep, find a section with the hiss. (use Up arrow to zoom in)
Make a selection of the hiss that is no more than .500 of a second. This is a VERY small selection.
Open your Noise Reduction plugin. Select "Capture Noise Print."
This will make an "audiograph" of the noise. Think of it as the mask selection for chromakeying.
Now, go to selection, open it up. In the drop down, choose "All Sample Data" (I think that's what it says, I don't have NR on this computer so I'm doing this from memory)
Now, hit the Preview button. You'll be able to hear the corrected audio. Adjust as necessary with the Reduce Noise slider. Expect to reduce noise by as much as -30dB.

DON'T try to get all the hiss in one pass if it's fairly loud or complex. Run the NR plug once, getting what you can without negatively affecting the "good" audio.
Run the plug a couple of times if necessary. Sometimes it takes up to 10 passes to kill everything.

Pay close attention to quiet areas in the audio as this is where problems show up with NR.

When you are done processing and ready to go back to Vegas, just close Forge. It will ask if you want to save. Choose "Yes."
Vegas will now have a new audio take on the timeline, minus the noise and you can play it back perfectly in sync.

A side note, the original audio is still there. Just select the audio track and press "T" to bring back the original audio Take.
Hope this helps.

how do I that ?

But thank you thank you... I'm so close

finally I'm in the right process.

Greatly appriciated.

Re: Sony's Noise Reduction

In Forge, find a section that is just hiss. ie; look for an area that doesn't have any dialog, such as between words, pauses, etc.
Make a selection. A very small selection. Zoom in by using your up/down arrows on your keyboard. This will let you drill deep, (or zoom in other words)
Then run the procedure as described above.
