Sony VG30 pics released

Not bad at all.

I suppose the EA50 will possibly have better images, even if the sensor is basically the same as the VG-30 and NEX5r (being that the EA50 is part of the NXCAM line and all). Still though, this is looking like a big step in the right direction compared to the fumbles with the VG-20.

I'm going to keep an eye on this, as one of these and a GH3 could be a nice combo. Or if this has a good image out from the HDMI, then maybe this one plus an external recorder like the ninja will be a good combo.

I like the VG series cams but the earlier versions have fallen short. The VG-30 ticks a lot of boxes though. 2x digital crop still gives 4k sampling for HD and means I can adapt it for my 16mm lenses. It will also take my Minolta Rokkors too. B&H features list says "comprehensive manual controls" so it will be interesting to see if they have broadened the menu selections.
Add 16mp raw stills capability and it becomes a practical all around upgrade handycam for my ancient GL2.
I expect rolling shutter performance will be about the same, but hopefully aliasing performance is improved.
I don't like the codec, but my wife needs a simple to use camera for doing teaching videos and web marketing videos of her art work. It would be well suited for that and a huge step up from the old Canon for about the same bucks.

The old VG cameras indeed had issues that mostly killed them, and which could not be foreseen from the spec list: image quality ended up no better than that of the NEX-5N. We'll have to wait and see, but it looks like Sony may be the company with the least fear of cannibalizing itself.
