'Sony Vegas Movie Studio + DVD' right for me?

I'm about as new as a newbie could be. My wife has wanted to get into videography for maybe 20 years (she shot a few weddings and short documentaries years ago, and then her camera was stolen and she's not been able to get equipped again until we decided to just do it!), and now we've (two days ago) gotten our own DVX100B :Drogar-Happy(DBG):

Gee, it turns out you have to edit that stuff after your tape is full!

Naturally, we spent all we could to get the DVX-B, and have maybe $90 I can now spend on editing software.

Our priorites are; output (DVD's) video quality, and output audio quality.

I'm asking you all if you think the "Sony Vegas Movie Studio + DVD" I've found on Amazon is a good bet?

Amazon has several versions on different pages, but eventually I found one with an Amazon list date of October 21, 2006, so I'm supposing that's version 6?

My current computers are;
Windows xp with a 450 processor and 600 something MB of RAM (don't know video card) with firewire ports.
and an OSX iMac with a 400 processor and 1000 something MB of RAM (don't know video card) - apparently it's the last version of the blue iMac they made, with firewire ports.

If the image and audio quality are the best they can be, I'm satisfied to buy an older version that one of my computers can possibly work through. If I need to get a new video card for my Windows machine, I might be able to do that during the summer.

Our plans for the whole project are to start out with top-level appearance DVD's of artists in our downtown neighborhood (the first one will be of me - I'm a glass artist, and a couple painters have expressed interest in their own DVD's if the video quality is professionally clean when my video is finished), and possibly in a year have earned enough money to further our video studio's capabilities with a new computer and possibly a 2nd DVX100B for additional angles, etc.

Any suggestions are really appreciated! Thanks for taking the time:love4:

Hi Brice

That does not support 24p (Which is what you'll get with your dvx100)

I'd reccomend atleast Vegas 5 !

It's always worth the extra $$$ to get DVD Architect with it. DVD Architect includes the Dolby Digital encoder which allows for export of AC-3 files, and you need this to export 5.1 surround sound. By itself, the encoder runs almost $300.

I'm sure this had to get worse before it gets better..........

I'm sure this had to get worse before it gets better..........

So 'Vegas 5' or 'Vegas 6' is the big version (with 24P editing), and 'Vegas Studio + DVD' is the smaller version (I guess with only 60i editing?)? And what is the Platinum version?
The prices go from $60 to $600, and it's hard to compare with all the versions I'm looking at now.

Many thanks for the help already! I'm trying to figure this out - stick with me a little longer.....

Oh, and for some reason I thought you could record 24P, edit as 60i, and burn to a DVD with a finished look similar to 24P - no?

I can't find anywhere in the specs on Vegas versions a reference to editing 24P; B&H doesn't have very long specs, and other sites I'm looking at don't mention capture rates either.

I would like to get a version that includes DVD Architect as you all recommend, which seems to be included on the 'Vegas Studio + DVD' (cheap), but not the 'Vegas' (not so cheap) (?).......
