Sony V1u 24p support

2 questions:

1) Does anyone have current info as to when/whether Apple will offer 24p support for the Sony V1u camera?

2) FCP editing in native HDV (MPEg2 Long GOP) - is it truly problematic? Stories welcome.

We are editing a long form documentary and I need a managable solution and workflow for over 100 hours of footage.

Thus far, we have been downconverting the HDV footage via the Sony M15u deck, capturing and editing in Standard Def, but this is not a long term answer.

Thanks.

The more HDV footage you have to deal with, the more you really, REALLY want to use the AIC. It has no image loss, and is faster and easier to edit with.

Drawback is that the video files are larger.

Bascially changes the Long GOP to an all I-Frame format. You get to keep your HDV quality, and not have to overload your system with that Long GOP format. You'll capture with the AIC (if it works with that cam, I assume it does) and edit with an AIC Sequence. You can print back to HDV tape if you needed to, also.

As for when Apple will do anything, well, there's no telling until Apple says so. I would assume in an upgrade before NAB. Or this close to NAB, who knows? I'm sure they will eventually, but I'm not familiar with the V1u first hand.

On any Dual G5 System or Above, HDV editing is really no problem at all unless you are doing heavy effects or color correction. HDV editing has gotten much easier. FCP now supports the 24f from the Canon which is also 1080i HDV with a 15 frame GOP, so I imagine that it will capture fine. I cannot confrim this though since I use an HD100. You cannot capture AIC with 24P from HDV yet.

Presently you must capture footage from the V1 using AIC with FCP.

I agree with Ben, which is why I just bought myself a 2tb raid server last weekend. I will encode everything with AIC now. Much faster to edit with the AIC footage, but must have the space for it.
