Sony UWP wireless antenna problems

Hey all,

I'm getting some nasty noise from one of my sony utx-b2 transmitters when I mess with the antenna, a problem that my other set doesn't have. It's a couple years old, and has surely taken some damage in that time. There's no visual wear, but the problem seems to be a poor antenna connection.

Unfortunately, protecting the antenna from being touched when placed on a subject in run-and-gun verité doc work isn't possible. Is there any fix for this?

Getting information from Sony is impossible: since my first purchase--an ex1--several years ago, sony's ServicePlus site has never worked for me, never allowing me to log in regardless of how many new accounts I created, and the support number they give me when I get the error sends me to the wrong place.

Any thoughts would be great--I'd love to not drop another few hundred on another mediocre transmitter. On a side note, what would you think about mixing a different (better) transmitter with the working sony receiver? Thanks!

> Many systems have proprietary pilot tone squelch, compander and other system specific features. (not to mention different frequency blocks) So even another Sony transmitter may not work correctly.. or at all. Best bet; Take or send the ailing device to an authorized Sony service center.
FWIW, the Sennheiser G2/3 is a better system IMO. A replacement antenna is about $5 and can be changed in ten minutes. (electronics/soldering experience required of coarse)
I'm sure you've read the "What cheap system should I get?" $500 wireless sticky

Chances are excellent that the problem is simply a broken wire in the antenna "whip". As you say, it gets a lot of abuse, and it is rather common for it to break like that. The solution is quite simple, replace the broken wire with a new on OF EXACTLY THE SAME LENGTH. That may involve soldering and using heat-shrink tubing, but it isn't rocket-surgery. Of course, you would remove the antenna form the transmitter while working on it to avoid heat damage to the transmitter. In fact, I have made some spare antennas by finding a bolt with the same threads, and making copies of the antenna assembly.

Or you could just buy a replacement antenna... http://www.encompassparts.com/item/8225186/Sony/1-754-576-23/Antenna

As RickR says, attempting to mix-n-match a different brand or even model of transmitter and receiver is ALMOST NEVER successful. Not worth pursuing, IMHO.

Thank you much Richard! I'll probably buy a new one (and a spare as well). How do I remove the antenna--just pulling? Doesn't feel right...

The antennas on my Sony wireless transmitters (and receivers) thread in like a bolt.
But the photo of the replacement for your unit looks more like some sort of bayonet (twist and pull??) attachment.
Recommend downloading the user manual if you don't already have it.
