Sony UWP-V1 or Sennheiser EW122-p G3

VERY new to the world of motion. Just moving from stills into video. Purchased a Canon HV40 to get my feet wet. Going to be doing some dictating from the back of the camera while filming and demos in front of the camera for some college courses I am teaching. Concluded that a wireless/lav set-up is the way to go.

What are your opinions on these two specific models? I need to order something on Monday. After reading through the forums. I realize that sound is half the video and don't want to short change myself. I have ruled out the VHF sub-$200.00 category, but I am still on a budget. Is there a 200 dollar difference between the two? You can find the Sony out there discounted to around 400, the Senn is locked at 600.

One concern is with the "noise floor" referred to in this post:

Thanks for the input. Looking forward to shooting and submitting to the forum.

I had the same debate and ordered the Sennheiser G2 from B&H for $490. The new G3 is locked at $600. I could have gotten the Sony for about $390 with the rebate but decided for the Sennheiser so I can boost the AF OUT into my HV30. Thus I can lower the preamp on the HV30.

Now the G2 series is pretty much being discontinued so you have to check the B&H website daily to find them in stock. They go quickly. I saw it and waited a day and they were gone. The next time I saw it last Friday I pounced on it. Here's the link: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=SEEW112PG2A&N=0&InitialSearch=yes

Either system is worth the money you'd pay for them. In our testing, (UWP-V1 vs. Ew112 G2) the range was similar, with the Sony starting to lose signal around 200ft and the Sennheiser around 225ft. There was some minor interference up close with the Sony, but this was a result we were unable to duplicate later, so while it's worth mentioning, the cause was unknown. Possibly attributed to an iPhone on and in close proximity (a no-no anyway), it happened only outdoors and not indoors.
The Sony offers headphone out and true diversity. The Sennheiser offers further distance and better signal quality overall, with the new feature of infrared syncing and more available frequencies within each block. Sennheiser also has a useful Frequency Finder tool on their website, to help you decide which band is best for your area.
The included lavs are fairly even-matched, but most people would want to go with an upgrade if there's budget left. (side note: people with older Countryman Lavs will find that if wired for Sennheiser G2, their old lavs won't work with the G3. They have fixed this now and all lavs will work with G3 if wired for Sennheiser)
Battery life for the wireless systems were evenly matched as well.
Overall, I'd still recommend the Sennheiser system, unless you could make use of the headphone out feature of the Sony (DSLR shooters?) It's been tried and true, and the G3 systems even feel slightly more rugged and substantial.
Just my two cents.

Be careful buying this for use with your hv40. I just received my G2 and get serious interference when the receiver is anywhere close to the camera. See my new thread looking for solutions: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=198227

The wireless system is essentially unusable if you want to mount it on or near the camera. You would have to put it on your belt and run a longer cable to the camera. I will probably be sending mine back for a refund. Plus there is an unacceptable hiss in the audio with the G2. The preamp in the receiver is the culprit I believe. Maybe I just got a defective unit or something.

There is no unacceptable hiss is a G2 system - either you have the settings wrong or you have a faulty system - in the other thread you say you were sent a used G2 system instead of a new one - maybe someone sent a faulty unit back to the dealer and it got sent out to you instead of being repaired.

Also - if the camera is causing RF interference it is likely to be a faulty camera that would need checking.

Please - thoroughly check all the possibilities before you start blaming a piece of equipment publicly.
