Sony UWP lav and zoom Hn4 very "sss" too pronounced

Hi there,

I have a problem with my sound on some of my interviews. On some interviews the "ss" are way too pronounced, very hissy, on some words like " his sister" it is very very bad. Here is what I am using:

- wireless lav UWP-V1 with rechargeable batteries in them but fully charged
- Zoom Hn4 set up on mic 1 and manual gain control. Comp1 (vocals)

Mic is setup properly on the spokesperson so I don't think that has anything to do with this.

Any idea?

Thanks!

The lav mic that's included with the UWP kit is notoriously pretty lackluster (that's one of the ways that the Sennheiser G3 definitely beats it out). I bet if you swapped out the lav you're using for an ECM-77BMP that the problem would go away.

Hey Sam,

Thanks for your reply.

The weird thing is I had this mic before, it worked great with my EX1 but sounds completely differently when coupled with the Hn4. Could it be a setting in the UWP or the Hn4?

ECM-77BMP sounds great but i would have to spend another $250, I would love to avoid that and get a decent sound with the mic I have.

I don't know the UWP system but can we assume it has a mic level output and is plugged into the H4n's XLR connector? Whereabouts is the record volume set on the Zoom and what kind of levels are seeing on it's meter? What sample-rate/bit-depth and format are you recording.
As Sam stated, a better lav would maybe help.. but If it sounds 'OK' with the camera it 'should' sound okay with the H4n.

Hey Rick,

- mic level output and plugged in with DSLR
- Hn4 recording level at 70 / and recorded track is around -12db

thanks

Hi guys,

Thanks again for your replies.

Like you said before and after reading more on the internet, it looks like the lav which come with the kit is quite bad. Maybe my hearing got sharper too because i don't recall my interview sound being that bad.

Anyway, I am now looking for an upgrade for my lav. Sam, are you recommending me the ECM 77BMP? did you have a chance to test it?

Thanks again guys for your help.

Cedric

Some people's "s" sounds are different from others. I noticed this when I used to edit dialogue for video games. We used the same mic 99% of the time, and some people would have really nasty "s" sounds, and others not so bad. If dentures are involved, it's really noticeable.

Alright, so I sold my UWP system and bought a sennheiser G3. Problem solved and I like the senny much better...
