Sony to Introduce 4k Movie Streaming with PS4

Well... they just gotta improve the infrastructure then it would be no biggie.

I just got bumped up to 50/5 mbit for no fee and no extra charge, and this is using the same old cable that his been in the building for a long time.

Most universities run 100/100 here... my workplace runs 30/30.

Wish they would do 4k gaming. Would probably make more of a difference in gaming then it would in movies for home use.

By 'they' I assume you mean the ISPs that are many times also cable and telephone companies that are seeing their root businesses drying up? I'm sure they will improve the infrastructure but only in a way that greatly improves their bottom line. In terms of broadband speed and availability the US lags behind much of Europe and Asia. H.265 will cut down on the size but many (most?) ISPs in the US have data caps so even if the speed is good you still have a max amount of data you can pull down in a month.

4K gaming is well down the line I think. Few console games today even run at 1080 natively and many graphically intense games run at 720p (or sometimes less) to keep the frame rates high enough.

Higher frame rates are the future but nobody likes the soap opera effect. I predict variable frame rates will be a huge success.

This is a very lazy implementation. HEVC have been demoing 7-10mbps 4K; I could stream that.. but 100gb? Forget about it.

I agree, 100gb is way too much of an overshoot, 45-50gb is more realistic I'd say. Also, there are really not many countries where connections are as fast and stable as in Japan, so it's still too much in practice.

As to 4K gaming, I suppose that might work if the graphics are drawn in a simplified manner, but current games barely push 720p at 30fps never mind 1080p. I would much rather see 1080p at higher, solid, frame rates; and graphics with high density of detail.

That 4k video will look great on everyone's 1080p screen...

Also 100gb per video? seems steep, I'm guessing this new h265 (whatever the tech name is) will be like h264 for HD video and really be able to compress 4k well in the future. For now, sony is just future proofing their ps4 so in 5-10 years when 4k is really popular, they will already be in the game. It was almost like how they has the bluray player in the ps3 when HDTVs were still expensive (2006?) and a ton of people just bought ps3 over xbox 360 because they got a bluray player with it, which was like $400 bucks alone at the time. Either way, i'm sure xbox 720 will have 4k support as well, its inevitable unless microsoft is really that out of touch with the demand of 4k that will be upon us in 5-10 years.

Sony's Blu-ray move w/the PS3 was a bit of a financial disaster for them though. They had to sell it at such a loss that w/in a year they started dropping other features from the console just to stem the bleeding. Sony's other divisions are going down the 4K path (TV sets and cameras) so it makes sense for the PS4 to fit into that but hopefully they don't repeat the same mistakes. I don't know how much 4K costs to implement but if it takes 5-10yrs for 4K to permeate the mainstream (which I think it will) and consoles are on a 5-8yr lifecycle then I don't think 4K video output is a must have if it's going to add a lot of cost to the system though it's always nice to keep up with the Jones'.

^ well, they won the HD-DVD vs Bluray war, didn't they? Now, what is 4K trying to fight?

All these press releases sound to me just like the Youtube 4K one a few months back. That is, irrelevant.

The PS3 was $600 and the first blu-ray players were around $1000... The PS3 was by far the cheapest player at the time. A 40" 1080p Sony LCD screen cost about $2,500 back then.

4K's battle is to become 'the next big thing' so consumers will go out and buy new electronic gadgets and TVs. 3D was a swing and a miss so now it's 4K's turn at bat.

Our species will not survive the next 200 years if we do not wake up and realise there is no need to acquire more crap this year than you had last year, especially when last year's crap still works
