Im using sony 60 min MDV tapes "the premium series"

are these okay to use on the DVx? im still waiting for my panasonic rebate tapes to come in

get a cleaning tape, clean the heads on the DVX. then when you get the Master tapes, only use thoes, or fuji tapes. mixing tape brands is bad news. You can use, fuji, panasonic MQ's, and i think maxells. if you use thoes alot, stay the hell away from Sony, and JVC tapes. they use a different kind of lubricant on the tapes. when they mix it screws witht he heads. i used to think my Sony camera was broken cause i used to use only sony. got a dvx, used the MQ's in the sony, and bang, suddenly drop out liek crazy. sofar ive only used fuji and Panasonics. when i do have to use Sony, i clean the heads, with a cleaning cassette, before and after running the sony tape. ive had no problems. ( mind you i refer to the sony camera, not the DVX. it touches nothign but Panasonic MQ's)

I have over 400 hours on my DVX. I try to stick to Panasonic MQ's exclusivly, but I estimate AT LEAST 150 of those hours were shot on Sony tapes and even some crappy Maxell as I have worked on a few productions where thats what they were providing. I always made sure to head clean before and after using the different tapes, but have had no problems with my cam.

I think you should try and stick to one brand of tape (Panasonic MQs preferrably), but if you HAVE to use something esle, just make sure to head clean, and you should be fine.

The issue is not one that will show up right away. But the two lubricants combine ot forma hard shell (shellac) that will then require a professional head cleaning to get rid of. Its not worth saving a few cents on tape, just buy some MQs (I buy 25-50 at a time to get good price).

just stick to one brand as much as possible. If you mix a tape every now and then its not gonna poision the camera. Just make that occasion the time when you clean the heads.

Also, i think we obsess over these things because we (not rich people, mostsly) have chosen an expensive hobby/Profession. and we want our gear to last as long as possible.

But ot be perfectly honest this machine seems pretty tough. My friend Allie works for MF+P an ad adjency, and they bought a dvx100 like 3 years ago, and its been beaten, dropped, misused, and fed everykind of tape imagineable, and it works perfectly.... so i think the second you acknowledge mixing tapes can cause problems, only then is when it actually causes problems. Kinda like that preverbial law of nature "If it can go wrong it probably will"

Dont fret. wors t comes to worst, you clean the heads.

oh yea, save up money and buy MQ's in bulk from Rush at EVS. we DVXUser.comers get em cheaper.

Unfortunately, it's like bad oil in the engine, takes a long time to burn out. You will not see detrimental effects for about 100-200 hrs., after the time the 90 day tape mechanism warranty expires for most people.
