Sony shows a 8k x 2 k CineAlta at NAB

Dark Side of the Camera
An 8K x 2K CineAlta
The boldest piece of Sony's sensor narrative is about size. On the heels of the Super35mm-sized single CMOS sensor the compnay developed for the F3, Sony has announced another CMOS single-sensor milestone: Its newest CineAlta camera featuring an 8K x 2K chip. That gives the new 8K CMOS inside a total pixel count of 20.4 million pixels, far more than the roughly 8.8 million pixels of the current 4K x 2K sensors in other existing cameras on the market. The new sensor size obviously also brings with it higher color reproduction and resolution than can be captured by those other 4K sensors. But don't confuse sensor size, pixel density and resolution with the recording format. The images are still recorded and output in 16-bit RAW 4K (16:8:8). During our demo at Sony's Atsugi Technology Center in a suburb of Tokyo, however, those images were noticeably crisper, brighter and cleaner as a result of the extra pixels. Blacks were deep and rich, too. No shades of gray here, though if you were shooting a mountain climber against a textured, marbled slab of granite, this imager would certainly pick up every bit of uncompressed detail. I'm told the camera will shoot from 1 through 72 fps. Crank that up to a High Frame Rate mode and you can go all the way up to 120 fps.

When we first got a look at this camera under wraps at Atsugi, it was unofficially called the "F65." We were told the official name would be released at NAB, where Sony will be showing a prototype along with a 1 TB SR memory card that can hold up to 60 minutes of content shot at 24 fps (more on that new card below, in the HDCAM-SR section). At the time, executives estimated the camera would begin shipping in early summer. I can't show you any pictures of this large-sensor wonder, but you will be able to see for yourself at NAB.

OMG - 8k!
The pixel count madness goes on.

Did anyone catch this in the article, in reference to the FS100?

Some across the Interwebs have wondered why there's no SDI out in this camera. If you've got 10-bit HDMI out with SMPTE and audio timecode, you may not really need SDI, as others have suggested, saving you even more money.

10-bit HDMI? Really?

Hmmm...interesting. Very interesting.

Got my AF100 next to me...I'm happy LOL. :P

8k huh? Yippie! Now I can look forward to some Hollywood films in the next 5 years being shot in 8k and down-converted to 4k for projection like many are saying all theaters will have (even though most have JUST recently upgraded to 2k DP, I'm sure they'll ignore their investments and have a bonfire behind every Regal in favor of the 6 or 8k projectors). Also, as I'm sure you know, RED is developing an upgrade to the actual human eye (no release date yet but hey, when is there ever one?) so it can see 4k. Can't wait for that! (I've heard some say it already can, not these eyes...my sight sucks)

All in fun folks...calm your little Scarlet butt kissing fan boy mind/heart tee hee...

Oh you are so NOT being a good customer!.....

I hate trying to correct information given in a sarcastic post as who knows what is really a joke and what is not. But I would like to point out that this camera records in 4k not 8k from what I have herd it does an in camera downscale to 4k, but then again seeing as how little info we have to go on this could be wrong.

honestly when I stop seeing a perceivable quality difference between camera's resolution then it won't matter, thing is that has not happened yet for me at least. I could care less what people tell me my eye's can resolve because numbers on paper don't change what I see in the real world with my own two eye's.

here's to the day when camera's resolve so much detail and information that the human eye can't even perceive it, I'm a huge fan of oversampling and as long as recording media and size allows for it why not have that extra latitude in picture IQ? but sadly from what I have seen we are far from that day, but that does not mean we can each be happy with the place we and are equipment are in and the amazing images that we can get now!

Peace and respect to all, and their choices, weather rational, or emotionally based, because who is one person to tell another how to live their lives, fanboy it up just please respect the non fanboys or rather fanboys of another company.

play nice!

No, from what I've heard, it's only 8-bit. I don't know how Sony's getting timecode over HDMI -- I thought HDMI didn't support timecode.

Another guy posted that a Sony rep at a recent event in LA said the output was 10-bit. Who knows?
And this HDMI will support timecode.
