sony pcmd1

has anyone ever used this?

it looks lovely, but it seems a bit overpriced for what it is

the fact that it doens't have xlr is pretty bad

but if the internal mics are really good, then that would be ideal, save having to carry extra gear and cables etc, small setup time and decreased bagage would be great!

if i did get this i'd use it for primary sound for film productions, folly, live music recordings and such, good for this?

cheers

get the zoom h4 for $300 and try it out. that really isn't the right thing for film production (how would you boom it 18" from the talent)? It would work for some types of foley recording.

What are you shooting with? A dvx or hvx? there is your recorder

Oktava MK012 with hyper cardioid capsule $180 (sound-room.com) use the code "DV" for 5% off
K-Tek KSSM Shockmount with soft bands $120 (trewaudio.com)
Rycote Baby Ball Gag $140 (sound-room.com)
Rycote Furry Jammer $70 (sound-room.com)

and/or

AT4073a
K-Tek K-Zepp

and

Gitzo 12'5" carbon fiber pole (7560c?) $250 (just released a replacement for this pole at NAB, don't know the #)
Sound Devices Mixpre $665 (trewaudio.com) or SD302 if you can afford it
Petrol PSDMB-302 Mixer Bag $135 (trewaudio.com)
Sony 7506 headphones ($100)
GOOD Star Quad Cable $35-75 each (trewaudio.com)

actually i'm using super8, so i need a stand alone recorder

i've looked into the zoom and the edirol but i've heard bad things about both of them
i really like the no nonsense approach of the d1, everything is clearly laid out in a way that makes sense, and it looks like the sort of thing you could use without frustration, but of course that's just from looking at the pictures (maybe it totally sucks, but i doubt it)

if the sony really does have a decent pair of mics, then that would save on bagage/cables/setup. At the moment i'm trying to keep things as simple as possible, i also do a lot of music recordings and i really like the idea of this tool.

the only thing wrong with it is the price, but i can kind of justify that by the build quality. If it sounds good and will give me 10+ years of use and abuse, then i wouldn't mind forking out the intense price.

i just want to know how it sounds, from a video perspective.

you can't really use that to close mic boom someone and get good production sound. I am not sure what you are going for here, but I think you are on the wrong track.

only one bad thing - it not sits well on the boom :-)
waist of money for your goals
forget about sony , for half the price you have tascam hd-2 or marantz 671
you will need reed of of aditional 500-800 for 2 mics, boom , suspention sand some wind protection
dont forget good headphones

dont foget slate start and tail to keep the sync later , the super 8 is quit problematic

never thought of doing a slate at the end of a shot (i guess that's to make sure your footage is at the correct speed), cheers i'll have to remeber that!

personally i hate booms, they take up valuable pairs of hands, i much prefer to use mic stands when ever i can (tripod mount on the bottom of the sony would work well for this) but i do see your points.

it's funny i feel so unwilling to take your advice on board, i think the design of the sony is taking hold over my senses

jokes aside, i work with very small crews (like 1-2 people, including me) so if this can deliver the goods sound wise, it seems like the way to go for me. I mean i know i could get a base model macbook pro and a usb mic for the same price or under, but that would be a pain to take around, i'm really trying to minimise the bagage for the rig i'm putting together.

has anyone worked with this? is it really as solid as they say? i would never even consider getting one if i didn't believe it would last me more than a decade.

it is funny read comments of people who try reinvent the weal:-)
my dear - you want soundtrack or you want scratch track ?
people usually do some crazy stuff as moving in frame and turning the head ones in a while not to mention usually you use more then 80 mm lens from 4 feet to shot the action ,
by the way i see you didnt mention any light in your bag and i suppose you shooting everything on reversal 8 Asa in the sun contra jour :-)
make a room in your bag and better make a room to your sound person :-)
about how long sony would last - who cares in 2 yars from now there will be no spare parts :-)
check the taperssection.com , you will be able upload your self with used gear that will serve you much better then sony .

anyone have anything to say about the sony MZ-M200 (MZRH1) minidisc recorder?
btw i'm not being all "oh, i have to buy sony, blah blah" i just came across this and had not heard about it previously.

you will need some preamp in front
cheap yes - good , the edirol r-9 is better and faster for download
nice to see ypou running from 1800 to 200 but
you will still need booman and mics :-)

so the R-9 is goodish?

how do its mics sound? better or worse or the same ballpark as consumer camcorders?

the reason i'm looking into the minidisc, is cause i have some other MD gear and it would be nice to able to upload recordings from them via usb.

and the is always the chance i'd think of picking up an H4 (if i heard enough good things about it)

cheers

edit: which has better mics out of the edirol vs zoom?

anyone seen this

looks like sony decided to respond to some of the complaints, even though the combined cost of the 2 units would be ludicrous, it's nice to know that if i do end up falling for the sony i'd allways have this option.

that does put the unit in quite a nice paradigm. You use it with (what looks like) a proper reliable phantom power pre-amp for xlr condensers, in situations that require this. but then you can use the internal mics for fast unpredictable situations where portability is essential, without the compromise in quality that the cheaper all-in-ones bring to the party.

the only thing that still makes it undesirable is the price... still haven't quite figured that one out yet, my sense of logic is keeping my desire for cool gadgets at bay for the time being.
