Sony NEX-FS100 with Super 35mm CMOS image sensor

Indeed I did say Sub RED. Thanks Van.

And I must say that reviewing footage now I do not see the aliasing present that the Op has. Not gonna be surprised that whoever had that prerelease camera will be getting an unhappy letter from
Sony for allowing the footage to be published without approval.

I think the cam I was using is one of he closest ones to being finished and aliasing slash Moire was not one of my minor gripes.

I will say Op is right about the noise. This thing is incredible in low light. And this is REd MX user here.

And I don't know what rolling shutter is being discussed here, this cam is no worse than any other offering out there.

Thank you for the info. Can you post any other impressions you had of the camera?

Do have a lot, not purposely trying to reserve tell-all, just haven't finished cutting my day's worth of footage together and need to get cleared and stuff to be able to say anything me thinks.

It's all very good, though.

There was already a clarification in the F3 thread.

I have since uploaded the raw footage of the questionable scooter scene for testing there. Apparently, it could be a Premiere Pro CS4 issue. Windows Media Player also seem to have the problem. Somebody tested in Vegas Pro and said he saw no obvious aliasing.

I would check again in Avid Media Composer 5 to confirm when I get back to office.

I did ask my rep if the footage is embargoed and he said no. There are a few tests from Singapore online already and we are using the same camera.

UPDATE: Aliasing was found to be a post issue. Video has been re-encoded.

I bet that Sony would be very careful with any aliasing on this cam. I am sure they are very aware of the stomach pain it could inflict on cinematographers and company. Let alone be the culprit for 1000 forum threads about it.

Last time I checked external recorders aren't free :) Now, you may have one, but comparing apples to apples it still is another cost some people have to endure. I bought a $1k external recorder and I am SO GLAD I don't have to use it anymore. I think the quality of the audio on the AF100 is fantastic, and I should know a thing or two about good converters, I own an Apogee Rosetta 200 and usually have a Blue Kiwi Mic hooked into it. Those two pieces along, along with my Focusrite ISA220 preamp surpass the cost of the AF100 or FS100 by at least $1k.

But regardless, the reason two 5Dm2 won't matter to me (or other Canon cameras) is that I am sick and tired of the colored moire/aliasing. I have no faith in Canon that the m3 bodies won't suffer the same problem. Just like the 7D, t2i, 60D, t3i. They don't seem to care about fixing it yet. I'm tired of the 720p60 that is just really horrible. I am tired of the slow read/reset times on ALL the Canons (with the 5D being slower than the 7D even). I have an AF100 and it is SO much better than the 7D and 5D *FOR ME*. I am here about the FS100 because there are a lot of things about it I *REALLY* like. Do I plan on getting my hands on one to compare to my AF100, you betcha. I don't care who makes the camera, I just want my job to get easier. Plain and simple.

Honestly, it doesn't matter if you come from old school or new school, or whatever school. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about whether a product fulfills the needs of the user. I've listened to *MANY* people bash the 7D on every cinematography forum for EVERY reason, yet, I still used it up until recently because it did what I needed for the cost point I was at, and it did it damn fine. I have different requirements. You have different requirements. As far as I can see, we are all valid in our opinions.

Nicely said.

I won't know for sure that I want one until I see a bunch of side by side tests against the F3.

Since the F3 costs $7000.00 more, wouldn't the real test be with the FS-100 against camera's in its price range (The AF-100, for now)? If I had the money I would buy an F3 right now, without regard for the introduction of the FS-100. The F3 is a better camera than the FS-100 will ever be.... However, whether it is $7000.00 worth better can only be answered by each users circumstances and needs.

I could buy a lot of stuff if I wanted it badly enough. I've very happy with my EX3, if the FS100 is close enough to the F3 I will consider buying it. So far I haven't seen anything that impresses me but there is plenty of time for that to change. I want to see it compared directly to the F3.

If it looks like a nice step up from the EX3 maybe. It will have to be damn close to the F3 for me to bother.

Ok, I can see that. I don't know if the FS100 would be a step up from the EX3, depending on your particular needs. Just speculating, but from what I have seen so far, the FS100, for a pro-sumer camera, probably has more emphasis on the "Sumer" side, for a person experienced with use of the EX3, in its fit and finish and functionality. That may be frustrating. If it does share the image quality of the F3 then that is a different story.

The FS100 has the same imager (they say) but lacks some features of the F3.
So picture wise it´s not completely apples and oranges, despite the price difference (at least that´s what everybody here hopes) .

This camera is mirrorless, correct?

So I can use my Canon EF mount lenses and not incur a quality loss as there is no glass element in the adapter?

That is correct. You can check out the various mount adapters (such as EOS to E-mount of Nikon to E mount) on eBay. They're all "dummy" adapters as basically they're just a plastic tube with the different mounts on either end. The only issue will be that there will be no electronic control of the lens. So if you're using Canon EF lenses, you won't be able to adjust the aperture unless it has an aperture ring. Hopefully someone comes up with some sort of adapter that lets you use EOS lenses and control the aperture from the Sony camera. Since the E-mount is open source, I wouldn't be surprised to see that happen. I hope it does because I have a lot of nice Canon EF glass.

I believe Kholi is running the FS100 through a bunch of tests...I'm anxious to see/hear his results. From what I gather thus far, he sounds quite impressed. He has already said the low light is better than anything less than $20,000....I'm just assuming that he means along with the F3.

The E-mount is now open sourced so hopefully we'll be seeing some entrepreneurial adapter maker create an EOS mount adapter that has fully operational electronic aperture control.

Question asked to Sony Professional facebook live chat (paraphrased)
Q- Does the HDMI output 4:4:4?
A- No, 4:2:2

Q- Why no ND filter?
A- Small camera body can't accommodate the rotating filter like the F3 (Barry Green was correct on this one. That's why the AF100 is so fat).

That's it for now... I live in LA and have to go to sleep for work tomorrow.
