Sony NEX audio track not showing

Hi guys,

I´m currently testing CS6 and whenever I drop a NEX7 AVCHD (MTS) file on the timeline the audio track doesn´t get filed with audio. I´ve tried exporting the very same file to AVI and when I placed it on the timeline the audio track showed up. This didn´t happen on CS5.5. Any thoughts on how to solve this?

Hmmm... two thoughts...

First, for whatever reason, after ingesting AVCHD content, Premiere goes into this "conforming" process which takes quite a while. (There's usually a small progress indicator in the bottom-right of the window.) During this process, when you play a clip, you get no audio. That has caught me out more than once.

Second, you say "drop a NEX7 AVCHD (MTS) file on the timeline"... are you literally extracting .mts files direct from the SD card? If so, be aware that the AVCHD folder contains a lot of other files, which contain meta-data which is REQUIRED to process the audio correctly. The usual issue there is an audio glitch when stitching two parts of a long clip that got split... but it could be causing your problem. You should copy and import the whole PRIVATE folder. (if you're already doing this, please ignore this paragraph.)

Hope this helps...

I´m copying the files from the SD card to a specific video folder I use for my projects.
I thought this could maybe have somethings to do with me choosing the wrong sequence preset. I´ve tested "Digital SLR - 1080p - DSLR 1080p24" and then "AVCHD 1080p - AVCHD 1080p24" and it didn´t work. I´ve tried these same sequence presets on CS5.5 just now on a different computer and there is no audio problem.

Oh, and if I go to "interpret footage" the audio tab is greyed out. In CS5.5 itsn´t.
If I check properties on CS5.5 I get the audio info bellow, but no on CS6.

File Path: C:\1 - Rafa\Varios\3 - Fotos\NEX7\Video\00277.MTS
Type: MPEG Movie
File Size: 30.5 MB
Image Size: 1920 x 1080
Frame Rate: 23.976
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz - compressed - Stereo
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Stereo
Total Duration: 00:00:11:23
Average Data Rate: 2.5 MB / second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.0

My guess:
When you install Premiere Pro CS6 in the first run Premiere must to connect to Adobe server to download the additional settings and codecs.

Also try to drag one of the .MTS file from the Premiere Project windows where is all the media files, and drag the file to the little icon beneath with a form of page, at the left of the Trash Bin in the same Project windows, this create a new Sequence with the original settings of your media files.

Good luck

Rafael, as I said above, it's important that you copy the ENTIRE folder - the whole "PRIVATE" folder, not just the .mts files. The meta-data files under PRIVATE are essential for Premiere to interpret the audio correctly.

No, it won't be that. Sequence presets are a pet hate of mine - all they do is set the frame size and rate, the pixel aspect ratio, and the audio bitrate, but Adobe made dozens of presets that look incredibly confusing. I NEVER use them -- I always just create my own presets where I enter the 4 parameters it needs myself.

This does look like it's either "conforming", or missing the audio meta-data.

I will give this a try, but if this was the case wouldn´t I have the same problem on CS5.5? I´ve been just copying the MTS files on CS5.5 for a long time and this never happened. I´ll try it and report back anyway...I´ll be very happy to be wrong about this :)

It finally worked. I didn´t have to copy the PRIVATE folder. I used the same file I was using for tests before. I´ve dragged the file directly from the folder and dropped it on CS6s Project Tab and it would see the audio tracks. After that I´ve tried clicking on import to import the file (like I was doind initially and it worked too)
