Sony MicroMV DVcam

Re: Sony MicroMV DVcam

Stay far away from the Micro MV cameras. The footage can't be edited with normal NLE's you have to get special sony software to edit, and it isn't that great. Sony has completely discontinued support for these cameras as well. I wouldn't spend $10 for one of those.

Re: Sony MicroMV DVcam

I had purchased a DCR IP220 for USD 2000, and....and....and....to cut the story short....sold it for USD 350....with lot of difficulty.

Poor me...both literally and proverbially. :-[ :'(

But I am really greatful to Sony for introducing such a crap....and then backing out of its support. Hadn't this been the case I would have never ended up with my lovely DVX100AE.

Cheers... :D

Re: Sony MicroMV DVcam

I thought Micro MV was a tape? just a very small one....

Re: Sony MicroMV DVcam

is it like solid state, liek a Memory stick or somethign?

Re: Sony MicroMV DVcam

MICROMV is a Sony branded recording format on tape. The ONLY advantage this tape carries is that it is very small....almost half the size of a Mini DV tape. Their intenetion was to introduce a standard, besides the widely accepted Mini DV format. However, they very badly failed in acheiving anything in this stunt.

The MICROMV format is replete with all kinds of problems. Sony apparenlty did not do the required research before launching this brand. It has cost many were-sony-fans heavily.   :o :o :o. It is really a pitty that 'it's a Sony'.

All Micro MV Sony cameras can record only on the MICROMV tapes, not the Mini DV.

Re: Sony MicroMV DVcam

They are indeed very small tapes.  The format is pretty weird, too.  I think it's MPEG2 video at 12mbps.  Apparently it looks a lot like DV at 25mbps.  It's nice that they introduced a better compressor, I guess, but the whole MicroMV format in general is pretty inexplicable.

Re: Sony MicroMV DVcam

Counld't you do a pass through with another DV cam or a deck, and capture it this way?

MicroMV cam -> RCA cable -> DV cam or Deck -> Firewire -> into your computer?

Would this work?

Re: Sony MicroMV DVcam

That might work but it would be horrible.

12mbps MPEG 2 (4:2:0 colorspace I assume), through an analogue cable (degrades quality considerably) to 25mbps DV (4:1:1 colorspace). The footage (which already starts as just worse than miniDV I think) would look horrible by the end of that process. 4:1:0 colorspace I think then tons of loss from the analogue cable.

Re: Sony MicroMV DVcam

No it does not work that way. Micromv format is incompatible with any other format. that is why sony used to ship speical software with each cam, with the name Movie Shaker. Latest Pinncale and Ulead (Ulead Video Studio 7) softwares now have the possibility to capture and edit ur micromv footage. Some sigh of relief for those poor guys still having their Micromvs. however, the overall footage is very noisy. One cannot eliminate that by any means. At least I could not do it.

there is a plug in somwhere on the net that can help convert Micromv mpeg2 files to DVD mpeg2 file format. however, the micromv quality is not very good to begin with. After any such conversion, the end result detriorates even further.
