I was at FTXWest yesterday and the sony guys demoed the new HVR-Z7U for me (I don't think it's even out yet). I was stupid enough not to take any photos but my god that camera makes me want to leave my DVX on the street in front of a heavy car.
I won't go on a rave here about how great it is. I'm simply going to point out one tiny little detail they did that really makes the camera something else entirely:
On the back of the camera you'll find this little bracket thingy you clip on. The thingy contains a CF card slot. And when it's clipped on the camera it records HDV (or whatever else you are outputting) directly onto the CF card in whatever format you want. You can also plug the camera to the thingy using firewire and stream that way. And when you're done you can either take the CF card out and plug it into your computer or you can stream the content straight off the thingy with a firewire cable. Needless to say the price diff between a 32gb CF card and a 32gb P2 card is shall we say substantial? This feature alone makes this camera a worthwile competitor. And then there's the interchangeable lenses and other features to boot.
can't wait until it arrives in the local stores so I can give it a test run.
