I work for a guy who swears blind that in any situation, for any reason, shooting anything the Sony HVR-Z1U craps on the DVX100B every which way. True or false?

Just curious on anyone else's opinion, thanks.

(EDIT: assuming equally talented operators of course. Also regardless of if going for the "film look" or whatever etc)

Depends on what you want. You want interlaced high def? Then yeah, the z1u is probably for you. Want true 24p recording capability, then the dvx is it.

I've used both and they have their good sides and bad. The negative on the dvx is basically that it shoots sd at 4:3. The Z1u lacks real image controls and has a below-average audio system. It does shoot beautiful 1080i video.

Any shooting situation? Try a low-light situation. The DVX is about three stops faster than the Z1... they're different tools for different jobs.

IME, if you're gonna shoot with a Z1U (I've been shooting with a V1U) then be prepared to bring a lot of lights. More than you would think you need, even with warnings. Think of how much you would need, then bring three more lights on top of it.
