Sony makes some flat response headphones, model 7506? I think they're about a hundred bucks and highly recommended. Just one quesiton, are they comfortable? The headphones I have now have actually decrease my hat size by two inches! So how are the sonys for comfort?

Brianluce,

It is the 7506 model you're looking for.

Other than messy hair (I call it headphone hair) they are comfortable and not too tiring to wear. They are the industry standard.

Sennheiser makes the most fantastically comfortable headphones on the planet (way better than Sony). Although most of them are open-air designs, which although they're great for critical listening/mixing, they're no good for field work/production-sound.

As previously mentioned, the Sony MDR-7506 are the industry standard, and for good reason. Compared to many of the headphones on the market (eg. AKG K240's) they're extremely comfortable. It takes a little while to break them in, though. For the first few months, you may find them squishing your ears a bit after prolonged use. Once they've had a chance to loosen up, though, they're great.

As Hemophilia pointed out, some Sennheiser models are much more comfortable, but those models tend to leak badly. The nice tight seal of the MDR-7506's makes them well suited to location work.

I was wondering why most sound guys use the Sennheiser HD-25 and not the sony here, and I guess one reason is that in the US the sonys are at half the price of the sennheisers ...
In Europe the Sennheisers are 10 Euros more than the Sonys - so does it come down to the open/closed ear design or are the sennheisers really that much better sounding...?
(I only now the sennheisers and though they sound great, I really need to press them onto my ears in a loud enviroment to judge the sound...)

I have the 7506's and I must say I do find them uncomfortable during prolonged use. They sound great though and they probably need to be broken in more.

i use both the sennheisers are more precise ( i guess you are talking about the professional version and not the semi one as it completely different product) but they not fit everyone and not comfortable for every head, the have much better outside sound penetration then sony so i use them regularly where it where the situations is noisy and i need to hear the recording without outside interruption ,
the sony are quoit good but they are have allot of low fq response and frankly quit cheat , but they are very comfortable for long piriuds of time and if you know where do they cheat you know what to expect in the editing room
so i will say to the end that the sony are working for me for the 80% of the time .

I use the 7506's for everything from recording to metal detecting and find them very comfortable. Even on my fat (size 7 3/4) head. Plus I like the way they fold up and fit in a coat pocket.

The Senn 280pro are better at sound isolation but I found them very tight on my big nogan. They do cup your ears more comfortable then the 7506. I had also read they can be a bit flimsy for field use (certain plastic connectors break with wear). I did notice they didn't emphasize the low end as much as the 7506.

Best advice is to go test drive them yourself.

If the price doesnt matter have a look at this pair of Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO

I used them during a recording session in the studio. Fits good, does not suck if worn for longer sessions and sounds great. I have a mate who uses them always and everywhere, no matter if mixing or just listening to music

I just got the sony 7506. I'm not an audio guy, and not musically inclined. When it comes to audio, I'm an average joe...

But I will say... I was very impressed with the sound quality. They sounded noticeably better than any of my other headphones, and they were incedibely light... probably the most comfortable headphones I own.

So I would say yes... from my perspective, and compared to average headphones, extremely comfortable.
