I just received 4, 40min tapes and i need to have them captured. How much space do i need??

You can't capture native HDCAM (unless you're using a Sony XPRI system); I don't think any other system can deal with the footage natively. So that means, like esperman is saying, that you'll be capturing it into some other format. It is that other format that will determine how much space the files will take up, so you have to specify what that format will be before anyone can answer.

thank god i finally got in touch with the guy and they want it to be captured SD. They used a HD camera and they had no idea what HD means!!! They were sure that we could capture this on 250g hard drive in HD.

You could easily capture that much HD if you used the DVCPRO-HD codec. If they want it captured in HD, and you're using a Mac with a Kona card, you could import the footage to DVCPRO-HD 1080, it'd take up 160GB for four full 40-minute tapes.

yeah, but then you've recompressed - the real question is what is the final deliverable and what are the quality expectations there.

You have to recompress. No editor around will be able to use HDCAM, other than Sony's own XPRI. They don't make the HDCAM codec available.

So your choices are to edit 100% uncompressed, which would be extraordinarily taxing and space-inefficient, or recompress. If they're happy with SD, they should be thrilled with a DVCPRO-HD version.
