Sony FX3 camcorder registered - 8K?

Watching the Aussie vid.. how I hate youtubers

They love the jump-cut, don’t they?

If there is one characteristic that defines YT videos it has to be the jump-cut. They edit out the space between sentences. 1 minute of a person speaking to camera will have 5 jump-cuts removing the gap between sentences that occur in natural manner of speaking.

It’s used so heavily, I deduce, in order to accommodate short-attention spans. And make the video more “lively”.

What does shooting log have to do with white balance? Forgot to put what in?

I shoot my FS7 in Log and there is a toggle switch meaning I dont go into the menu for WB. I certainly dont dial it accurately as you would need when trying to shoot WSIWYG

But this cine camera forgot to put in the cine gamma settings (slog) didnt it?

Well I was more refering to not noting if the engagement of SQ is a now 6click operation or remains a 1 click operation.

Reports say no waveform and no vectorscope. Should we assume that also means no histogram?

Who actually uses those features IN the camera, anyway? When I need to see a waveform(or any other type of image analysis tool), I use the one built into one of my smallHD monitors. With an image actually big enough to see and tell me something.

I guess since it’s all software based, it doesn’t really hurt anything to have it in cameras(and shouldn’t add any cost, today), but it’s just not a selling point for me.

This implies you have a spare $1k and are going to be rigging on a power system - a sad reality that was required for my FS7

You can grab a smallHD Focus monitor for $300 and run it on a Sony L series compatible batt(if you choose). Great little monitors. I have four, counting the one with a built-in Teradek Bolt 500 Rx. I actually can’t remember the last time I pulled out one of my larger(7”+) on-cam monitors, because the Focus 5’s are just so darn convenient.

Who needs it? Anyone using the loupe to shoot, with no external monitor. Run & gun handheld.

That said, I can get along fine with only zebra.

I'm sure many have seen it - but I'm not sure that I've seen the video actually posted on this thread (sorry if I missed it) but just in case, here's Phil Bloom's review of the FX3. I found it an interesting, very well thought out narrative.

Totally with him on the idea of a separate EVF too (as I've already mentioned earlier in this thread). That accessory would be good for both the FX3 and the FX6...So come on Sony, get the design department on it!!!

Sam - you should try out the a7siii - if you can get your hands on one. Oddly an improvement over the FS7 in some important ways - like being able to easily WB while shooting Slog. (it's WB system is better than most "cinema" cameras I've used thru the years) And I think what Sony did here is take the "consumer division" a7s and slap the "cinema" division on it - and then take off a decent VF to give us the FX3.

I rarely even used zebras, when that was all we had, once I "learned" the VF on my camera(s).

For me, Zebras work fine, I just find them flickering all over my EVF to be obnoxious and at times, they interfere with what I need to see in the EVF when running and gunning.
I MUCH prefer a calibrated waveform display, it's hard to break habits after so many years. False colors too are arguably more accurate and versatile but I hate using them. It's probably
from all of those years in the edit bay, staring at a Tektronics Waveform Display that never wore off.

The A7siii is an interesting camera. It depends if it all shakes out on the sony side in the post FS7 era.. its not looking that way. I did a thread on moving to one AF system canon or sony. Canon is in the lead right now. And canon RF with EF lenses has space for behind the lens ND - a big win.

As for WB Ive never really cared - I was years into shooting raw before I picked up a video camera - im used to popping in a grey card or gretag card* and correcting in post I find the three switches on the FS7 to be quite enough , tungsten, in the middle, daylight. I use my wfm in RGB mode and can see if the blue or red channel is on the floor!

As for exposure Im WFM all the way. I tend to open the iris until I can see a definite flat clip at the top of the WFM and then close down the iris (or engage ND of course) until all the data exits the clipped region. Ensuring a perfect clip free ETTR.. which is how I think noise free digital is created.

So Im a fan of the RGB wfm - something that has eluded sony for years and is available (sideways.. its called a histo) on most DSLR cameras. My SmallHD 502 is excellent for this.

*Id like to get a card which has targets for the vector scope boxes.

Watching the Aussie vid.. how I hate youtubers.. or how clueless they are.. its all about reading between the lines.

So the camera has no degree shutter setting?

The SQ requires mode->scroll wheel

Then you gotta change shutter speed.

but the rear wheel is now (and I was initially impressed) an ISO wheel.

So back to changing shutter speed I guess thats some sort of menu dive.

The Sonys pretty much allow you to configure almost every button on the camera (with their mirrorless cams). So I'm sure you'll be able to configure it - it's one of the things that makes them so painfully complex though (trying to remember what you've configured where).

As it happens I am sort of interested in this cam as it doesnt seem as stupid wide as the C70 and could work on the gimbal.

I'm also considering it quite seriously. I've fallen pretty hard for the FX6 already (in spite of it's few really STUPID flaws). I'm hopeful that the worst offending features on the FX6 can be addressed in firmware though:

- Internal ND density labelled in stops (to one decimal place) instead of this stupid fractional nonsense
- A "Marker Only" display mode, so that you can see your actual frame without all the crap on top it
- Ideally a completely new, additional display mode that separates the camera info from the image itself (like Arri's Alexa, or Zacuto's Kameleon EVF).
- PROPER CLIP NAMING FOR GOD'S SAKE! Or at least the option of letting it do a normal "Reel No./Clip No." like the Venice (or every other "cinema" camera in existence).

These three issues are MAJOR usability problems, and need to be addressed quickly. I have hope that they would be firmware fixable though.

The FX3 adds the additional problems of:

- No 4k DCI
- No 24p
- No waveform for exposure
- No internal ND (this should have been a no-brainer, whatever they needed to change to squeeze it in, should have been done)
- ONE ****ING MOUNTING POINT ON THE BOTTOM OF THE CAMERA?!?!

Even with all that though, having a gimbal-cam/tiny-cam that matches the FX6's image perfectly, would be pretty brilliant. And even without the EVF, the FX3 would probably suffice for the few bits of stills work I still do too. Which means I could sell off all of my Fuji gear, and put the funds into lenses that will work for both the FX3 and the FX6.

Yes, zebras worked fine, but as you said, they did get in the way. My Vari’s did(do) have a temporary zebra switch, so you just bump it and you get zebras for just a few seconds and then they are gone again.

I like a (good)waveform on a monitor and false color is a good and valuable tool in certain situations, but I don’t like either of them in my VF. Numerous times I have gotten my F55 back from being out on a rental and the waveform in the VF is on. How in the hell does someone shoot with the waveform on all the time in the VF?
