Sony ECM44b, ECM77b odd power option: Must have AA for it to work.

I'm confused about the Sony ECM77b, 44b lav mics. Is it normal that I must use the single AA battery to make mic work? The web site states that I can use either 48V phantom or AA but it's not the case. I tried 48V phantom on the cam, SD744T and no luck. It only works when I put in the AA. Is there any way to make it work without the AA battery?

No I don't think it needs the battery for it to complete the circuit as all the ECM77b in my TV studios have no batteries in them and work fine on phantom.

Are you sure you are providing phantom power and not T power as they are different and is the cable you are using OK and working in balanced mode.

It also may be worth checking that the mic's are not faulty?

The AA battery does NOT normally need to be in place for the mic to function on Phantom Power, (this applies to the ECM44, 55 and 77). I would look at a possibly broken or mis-wired mic cable or something not switched correctly on then SD... for instance less than 48 volts or 'T-Power ', both of which would render the mic inoperative if there's no battery pwr. present.

On the 2/3" cam, there's only phantom power or no phantom. Will not work w/ out battery. On the SD 702T, the hard toggle switches are MIC, LINE, AES. Only in the SD 702T where I can specify the phantom 48v to be applicable to line, mic or both. There's nothing on the SD or the 2/3" cam to enable T-power" Just plain +48V phantom power. It's quite odd that I have several other 44b & 77b and it will not work without the battery. I don't like leaving battery in for long time due to chemical leakage or the batt will die during middle of the live broadcast.
