Sony comsumer APS HD camcorder announced

yeah, it's possible... but highly unlikely. it wouldn't make any sense to release such a cam without manual controls, 24p, decent avchd implementation and what not.

They didn't include video manual controls on the new still cameras...hell they didn't even include enough photo manual controls! Never underestimate Sony's ability to screw up a good thing.

It also means the lenses are larger, heavier, and more expensive.
Larger and heavier, yes. But more expensive? Not always the case.
I've seen some 4/3 lenses get up there in price, where APS-c lenses have filled out and become available from so many manufacturers in a variety of mounts that cost has continued to go down while quality has generally improved.
I do like the potential of 4/3, but APS-C still has distinct advantages both in performance and cost.

I think you're forgetting that part of the benefit and fun of using non-PL mount cameras is using pre-existing relatively cheap manual focus still lenses.

m4/3 renders anything above a 35mm a telephoto, so much of my lens collections will be that with m43.

It also means the lenses are larger, heavier, and more expensive.

I don't know, call me crazy, but even if Sony bungles some of the things we need (24p, codec, manual audio controls, ability to use Nikon/Canon glass) that this is still good news in the long run.

Just within the last month we've went from only having the Scarlet and current DSLR's to look forward to, to now having the Panasonic AF-100, the Sony pro-APS-C cinema camera, and now this smaller form factor one. Just as the Nikon D90 nudged Canon into the video-DSLR arena, then even if this Sony camera is not the bee's knees Panasonic and Canon will probably be able to deliver something that does meet our needs. (Haven't people been using an HV20 + 35mm adapter combo for years with good results? A good small form factor AVC-HD camera w/EOS mount from Canon is such a no-brainer now that it is just sickening!!!)

I'm gonna wait until official specs and price are announced before I condemn this camera.

Just have a HD-SDI output where we can capture uncompressed footage.

Maybe not HD-SDI, but I'm sure it will have an HDMI out. Hopefully it will be uncompressed unlike the DSLR cams have done so far with their HDMI outputs. That would mean we could still use a nanoFLASH with it. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Says it uses technology from the NEX-3 and 5. From what I've seen so far, these do 1080i not p, and only run 17mbps. Meh!
Dave

Based on the early information, the NEX3 is €250 ($320) and the NEX5 is €350($450) for the body. With a lens kit its NEX3 for $ 540 or NEX5 for $610 with either 18-55mm zoom or 16mm/2.8 prime. This is the definition of 'entry-level' in terms of pricing.

This is not a camera for people that are going to shoot things professionally, and comparing the camcorder to a product that is obviously positioning itself in the high-P&S, low-dSLR customer isn't representative.

this isn´t about the nex 3 and 5 - although for a walkaround , they might be cool too ! sony always tries to put new coolless technologies and leaves out the needs of the the real photographers - i´ll still keep eyeing the pany as the next lowcost solution -i.e. under 10k - next year I´d like to be able to buy an ap-100 and fixed lens scarlet - but the landscape is changing so fast that you can´t even think one year ahead !

.

Might be a longer shot for canon since theyll have to make new lenses for such camera. Ef lenses wont work like that for camcorders

Canon migjt do a wait and see approach to see whats the proper way to do.

This is all great developments. Hope to see more from panasonic

The datarate will be consumer level. It will have alias because they need sharp full resolution stills on a consumer camcorder.

This japanese site has pictures of the prototype:

And upon a closer look one may see that the new camera is made of... WOOD!

Wow! Sony sets a new standard in camera fashion. Hope the release version will include mahogany option :D

OK, it's a mock up but the body looks like the arse end of the old HC1 and the lens just has a roundy-round ring for focus.
This is a consumer-level camcorder after all, so forget about HD-SDI or even uncompressed HDMI. Think consumer.
I still think I'll pass.

It looks really unwieldly with the lens being that much larger than the body - BUT

add a pistol grip handle like my super 8 Camera:

And it would be an absolute blast to use this
