Sony cancels the release of The Interview

they could do that any time they want, regardless of whether or not a movie is released. so what is the point of not releasing the movie?

Kim has threatened people's lives if the movie is released.

If Sony released the movie anyway, and people died as a result, then Sony would be legally liable and face tremendously crippling lawsuits.

Sony is a big international corporation that has a media division. They have broad interests in many areas. If it were "just" a studio or a production company the decision would be much less complicated.

A big part of the problem is that we have sold our media to corporate giants so maybe we should stop doing that.

That is not correct. Sony is not liable for doing something that is legal, releasing a film, just because terrorists threatened to harm people. Sony might suffer bad publicity, but there would be no credible case for a lawsuit simply because they released a movie.

kim is not saying he will kill people if the movie is released. if anything, north korea is claiming the opposite by saying they are being unfairly blamed for the hacking attack which they aren't responsible for.

This story gets weirder by the day. Perhaps someday we'll see a movie about the movie, which will probably be better than the movie itself.

oddly enough, what you've described is the the exact plot of another upcoming james franco movie, The Disaster Artist.

It's the best publicity you could hope for.... a bomb of a movie..... now everyone will go see it.... LOL!

Absolutely. From what I hear the movie is beyond stupid and sounds like a total bomb. Part of me thinks this is an elaborate publicity stunt. What if the movie is a total dud and this is a stunt to get at least 100 million people to see it at $10? You now have the highest grossing bomb of a movie ever created grossing $1billion.

If it was just the threats to bomb theatres showing the movie, I could almost believe it. But there's no way Sony executives would air all their embarrassing dirty laundry to promote a movie.

The thing is, caving doesn't keep their dirty laundry from being exposed. The hackers can, at any time, go ahead and release the information. Or use it to once again blackmail Sony into doing something else they want -- cancel another film, or even MAKE a film that the hackers demand they make.

No matter what Sony does, I suspect that sooner or later the private info is going to go public. Just a matter of time.

There's been a major food, electricity, information, and freedom outage there for a few decades as well.

major internet outage in north korea. not good.

Yeah, those ten people with internet access must be suffering. I saw an interview with a Korean reporter who went undercover in N Korea in 2009 and she met College Computer Science majors who had never heard of the internet before. I'm sure the regular populace doesn't even know the movie exists...Crazy though if this movie starts an actual war.

Absolutely no way. Nope, this is the real thing, not a stunt. Which shows that truth is definitely stranger than fiction.

good news! it will be showing at select theaters on christmas day. alamo drafthouse in austin and plaza theatre in atlanta are confirmed.
