Sony cancels the release of The Interview

Also cancelled is the Steve Carrell movie, Pyongyang. Apparently all you have to do to completely derail the release of a movie you don't like is hack some emails and make a couple of unspecified threats against movie goers. RIP creative freedom.

Since the perpetrators have been successful in getting what they want don't expect it to stop with this.

when someone has reached cartoon level status, you might as well be making a movie about killing foghorn leghorn. but then people enraged by foghorn's death take to their computers.. and here we are.

Boy, I say, boy killing me isn't the solution.

This is sad. I think Sony was between a rock and a hard place. We're upset because we support creative freedom, but we'd be upset if anyone was hurt. Either way Sony loses, which was the intention of the terrorists.

I'm really interested to see this movie, and see what the general critics and public think about it. Is all this hype and trouble over a movie that is really funny, or was it going to be a bomb at the box office?

I did think some TV pundits were on target when they mentioned the Team America movie, and South Park movie with Saddam Hussein as a gay lover of Satan. It's not like this is a first.

Exactly, Team America is hilarious. It took guts to put that out and those guys have guts. Sony, not so much. The big studio systems aren't known for guts, just protecting the brand.

Pretty terrible precedent to concede to terrorists... and yes, this is textbook terrorism... but it's not new. There's a long and storied history of movies being canned due to threats, protests, and closed-mindedness from all corners of society.

Reminds me of the recent horrible "Red Dawn" remake, and how it just might have been slightly less horrible if they hadn't been politically forced to rewrite the script from China to North Korea as the aggressor... but maybe not.

they should have been the first pioneer in digitally releasing a major movie via itunes, netflix, etc.

$14.99 24-hour rental or something

I wonder if they yet will, maybe down the road.. if North & South Korea reunite

Speaking of which...
The Alamo Drafthouse in Dallas, Texas, will be showing Team America: World Police in place of The Interview on Dec. 27 at 7 p.m. Wallace says that the Dallas/Fort Worth location is the only location as of now that is planning to screen the replacement film…American flags and other patriotic items will be given out by theater employees.

The threats are terrible, but remember, North Korea, less than two years ago, was threatening a preemptive nuclear strike on Washington DC.

Despite the terribleness of the threats of violence, it's sad that this film release is almost getting as much, or more, attention than the threats of nuclear attack, which are mainly empty threats too, but carry a more grave consequence.

Everyone will forget about this soon enough... just like how everyone forgot about the nuclear attack threats.

Politics aside, I think it's tasteless to make a film about killing a current sitting leader, especially when it humiliates that person on the world stage. It's been done before, yes, but never to someone who has been so widely known as being irrational, immature and unpredictable.

His father was in his 60's when Team America came out, and had been the ruler of NK for 10 years. He was not really a good person, but he was undeniably more mature and stately than his son currently is. He probably took the film on the chin, but this was also before video was widely watched online and through the internet. Kim Jong Un is a 31 year old brat who has been leader for about 3 short years. The entire film is about killing him, making fun of him, and it appears that he is successfully killed in the end, one way or another. As an insane person who is trying to make the world take him seriously by threatening to kill millions of people on a monthly basis, he was perhaps the wrong choice for Sony to make.

That's just a little insight for those who wonder why this is different than Team America: World Police. That was a different time, with a different person. The latter being the biggest factor. I think almost any other world leader would have taken a film like this on the chin... but not young KJU.

There is only one reason the North Koreans gave a crap about this, and that's because Sony is a Japanese owned company. That the North Koreans and Japanese hate each other is putting it mildly. This is why Paramount was able to release Team America without a peep.

I've no qualms pissing off a sitting ruler of this particular country when technically speaking the US together with south Korea is still at war with the North Koreans, there was never really a formal end of hostilities. Its just like doing satirical propaganda films against Hitler and Mussolini during and after WWII.

Heck, even Obama encourages everyone to go out watch movies and that the threat isn't credible. My take is, Sony in particular is scared more damaging emails or data would be released. But as far as viewers getting harmed for going to the theaters? Bah.
