That thing looks pretty sweet for a cheap consumer camera. I don't like how it drops every fifth frame?! Kinda weird. I think that if the camera just used 30p it would be more useful...I dunno good try Sony...
Interesting. They say that it's basically dropping one frame out of every five. I normally don't believe a thing I read on camcorderinfo, and I would find it very difficult to believe that a satisfactory image could come from dropping six frames per second (I think video looks terrible when I see *a* dropped frame, I don't want to think how bad six dropped frames per second would look!) but I sincerely doubt Sony would botch it like that. So I'd be quite interested to see what Adam Wilt says about it when DV magazine gets a chance to review it.
..as far as manual operation for proffessional applications or filmmaking you might as well throw it out the window. its like putting a mcguyver version 24p into the body of a etch-a-scetch.. and there ya go .. "24p" with really "pro" controls.. please.. why did they bother, the only people that would buy this are suckers who are more or less "techno-struck" with the term 24p, and have no real professional groundings, or application for the product.. it makes me somewhat irritated that they would even compare it to the DVX which is a pro line camcorder designed for professionals. i dont care if my webcam can shoot fake 24p.. that doesnt mean its suddenly compareable and a competitor to the dvx.. theres just so much more to it. obviously sony is trying to corner some unknowligeable corner of the market with stunts like this.. unfortunately ..most of the market falls into that category . now well have people coming here asking which is better.. bah
This Sony camcorder really sounds like a joke. 24p by droping 6 frames per second sounds more like an anoyance. Such an effect can be emulated with a lot of NLEs to do an MTV style effect. But being a "feature" on a camcorder is like removing removing a single spark plug from a 6 cylinder engine. :-/
totaly wrong move SONY. once the reviews are published and everybody finds out how much it sucks and is so not worth the money guess what?? you have just lost your so called indie film maker audience. If somebody wants to make a indie movie, they have much better chance to do so with one of their lower level cameras than this crippled piece. I personaly like sony's consumer cameras for their nice color representation, however this is just totaly missed shot. Not even as an idea it will attract the indies simply because the picture will not be as competitive as dvx. so why not to stick to their original interlaced 30fps and try to suqeeze perhaps those 24fps into pd170?? not bad idea at all I must say, but totaly bad execution.
Until we see the actual results, all speculation about its quality is just that -- speculation. I would be surprised if Sony would implement it the way camcorderinfo describes. But I would reserve judgement until actually seeing the results.
For "prosumers" it's of course a non-issue, as the camera is not in the same league as a PD170 or DVX. But as a technological development, as a curiousity, I'd sure like to see footage from it.
