Sony A7SIII = $3500, 10-bit 4K120p internal, 16-bit 4K60p RAW out

I'm really surprised there's not more chatter about ProRes raw with the a7s3 + Ninja V, raw will be available up to 4k60p. This is basically the smallest, most cost effective option for HD/4k raw video if you want great AF.

Agreed.... and the specs list this as 4.2K (4264 x 2408) up to 59.94p (in 16 bit). I'm assuming the Ninja can't record that - but will "down res" to 4096×2160.
Really wish Sound Devices would still be making PiX recorders to update the firmware on my PixE5 for this.

Feel the same way about the Odyssey. Really unfortunate that Atmos monopolized the market after they all stopped updating them. Granted I can sell my 7Q+ for more the cost of the Atmos Ninja but the Odyssey is such a solid device.

Here's the running DR compilation, all @ SNR 2.0:

Alexa 14.0
C500MKII 13.1
A7SIII 13.0
C300MIII 12.8
FS7 12.7
S1H 12.7
UMP4.6 12.6
C300MKII 12.3
BMPCC6K 11.9
BMPCC4K 11.6
XT3 11.2
GH5s 10.7
A7SII 10.6

Even if they were ... think the PIX-E5 was hardware limited ... on 30P in 4K ... although it can handle 12 bit files ... and
minor advantage for Raw over PR HQ.

The 16bit linear out of A7Siii will be encoded as 12 bit log.

I don't understand the low-light of this camera. And there is also a major gap between usability.

In Undone's tests, 6400 was brutally falling apart (why?). He said it's usable (and I "get it"), but it definitely doesn't look like it. And then there was no point of using a higher number until you reached 16000.

I don't remember the a7SII being like this. 6400 was like 100.

IMO, this is an extremely major flaw. 6400, 8000, 10000 are very important numbers to have clean.

I was watching a comparison video of these two cameras and one thing that reminded me of was a wedding reception ruined by rolling led light banding. You can see it at 7:36 in the video. Its bad for both cameras, worse for the Sony (as bad as what happened to me). https://youtu.be/b_hp7HYDveQ I don't know if it was my bad luck but I never hear people talking about this.

That but also lens breathing. Did you see it? Filming himself with the R6. I'm tellin' yall, accident waiting to happen if you trust AF without question.

Wow, I wonder which lens that is! (I'm assuming it's an adapted one.)

In general, losing AF doesn't surprise me, but the behavior is bizarre!

Actually the a7SIII is now #1 on cinema cameras list!

The Pockets' reign is over!

(a7sIII is on the mirrorless list too, and #2 there.)

P.S. If you don't know, you have to refresh the landing page by choosing "Best Sellers" manually. Do this and 10/10 times you'll see the a7SIII now at the top. If this is not done then the landing page is just random cameras. Confusing, I know.

You are very right, it's a point that has generated less excitement than one would expect. I'm not sure I'll ever take advantage of it, but I think ProRes raw is cool.

I think the S1H and the R5 desensitized people to how cool the a7s3 features are. Recent headline for illustration:
View attachment 139878

That is an odd headline. But I'm sure it gets more clicks than "the new a7s3 now does 4k120p 10-bit internal with class-leading AF."

Given the issues Nikon had getting the Z raw to reality and how long its taken to reach the S1h, if this really drops when the camera ships that would be a big win for early adopters. Bloom shot a video with it already, so it definitely works.

I did, it still comes up BMPCC6K #1 Seller, A7SIII "Top Seller." You must be using an inferior browser, loser! Lol..

Now, back to regular programming...

What is the adapter to use with A7SIII for EF lenses?

Good question, I have heard decent things about the sigma one but haven't used it myself. I have a cheap Fotodiox one but it causes issues so stay away from that one. Im curious what people will be using as well because if I decide to stay sony I may just move over to sony glass (still waiting to see what the rest of the year has in store).

I'm certain the a7SIII is #1 on the cinema list...anyone else can check and let us know.

(P.S. The orange badge transition will be delayed. That will change by the end of the day. And the orange #1 will disappear from the Pocket 6K.)

___

And unfortunately there is no adapter at this time for any useful video AF. So it doesn't matter which one you use if you just want to use a lens on the camera (Vello, Metabones, etc).

But you'll need native E-mount glass for AF.

Looks like the Metabones smart adapter. $399.

Metabones description says it supports phase and contrast detect AF...??...

For stills...useless for video.

Check out some YouTube tests. Maybe they have improved it over the years, and it could always be better with the new camera (doubt it though).
