Sony A77 release very soon - is this the 5D/7D/GH2 killer?

Not according to Sony: "1920x1080 60P recording at 28Mbps. The new PS mode with a 28Mbps bit-rate enables the NXCAM Super35 to capture full HD at 60P."

Hey Squig..... I think Danielvilliers was really talking about the AF100's 60p. That puts out 35Mbps in 1080p.

The AF100 does not put out 35Mbps. Again, the AVCHD implementation Panasonic and Sony use tops out at 24Mbps because that I suppose is the safe limit for them. AVCHD 2.0 is up to 28Mbps. With a hack you can go higher of course but changes many things along the way. Like the need for very fast cards as well as cutting the shooting time in those cards among other things.

The AF-100 puts out higher than 24mbps at its 60p framerate. They do it via some kind of codec work around.

Edit: having googled it, i could be wrong in my understanding :)

I'm pretty sure the AF100 is in the 30 Mbps range for 60p. I'm sure Barry can explain it better than I can though so I'll wait for him to explain it.

I'll report on the 60p bit-rate as soon as mine arrives. There's nothing else out there under 5k that can do it! If it's VBR it will probably go over 28Mbit/s in high detailed scenes. 28Mbit/s being the average bit-rate.

Good stuff there! Now I'm getting excited about what the A77 will do with the 16-35 f2.8 and 24-70 f2.8 Sony lenses I just grabbed on the used market. :D

Yeah, that's definitely the best we've seen, but that youtube compression really kills it. I will say, from that video, the skintones look nice and even. With the 5d/7d, no matter how I light it, there always seems to be an orange-y red-y tint. I'm more impressed so far with the *seemingly* fix of the rolling shutter. I REALLY hope the days of "jello" is in the past for DSLR's.

Yeah the orange skin tones are a problem at 3000k, at 5500k not so much. I've liked the Nikon/Sony colour tones more ever since I had the D90. I can't wait to test the NEX-5N against the 5D.

WTF? How have I not heard about the crop when switching to video mode? "DPReview reports that switching to movie mode on the A77 results in a dramatic crop of the sensor. It isn’t yet clear whether this crop goes away if you disable SteadyShot Inside in movie mode."

I've asked Michael at Luminous Landscape to ask the Sony engineers about just what's happening with the "cropping" in video mode. It may take a week or so, but I'll report back what they say.
