Sony a6400

The versatile α6400 is an exceptional video camera, offering internal 4K (QFHD: 3840 x 2160) movie recording with full pixel readout and no pixel binning to collect about 2.4x the amount of data required for 4K movies, and then oversamples it to produce high quality 4K footage with exceptional detail and depth. Focusing during movie shooting is fast and stable thanks to upgraded Fast Hybrid AF technology, which keeps the subject in constant smooth focus no matter the scene, and even if an object crosses in front of the camera. This advanced AF plus touch focus functionality make it an ideal camera choice for many vloggers and video creators that are regularly creating and uploading content online.

For time-lapse movie creation, the new camera features built-in interval recording that can be set anywhere between 1 and 60 seconds, with a total number of shots from 1 to 9999. AE tracking sensitivity can be adjusted to “High”, “Mid” or “Low” during interval shooting, allowing for reduced changes in exposure over the shooting interval.

Additionally, for the first time in Sony APS-C mirrorless camera, the new model includes an HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) picture profile, which supports an Instant HDR workflow, allowing HDR (HLG) compatible TV’s to playback beautiful, true-to-life 4K HDR imagery. Further, both S-Log2 and S-Log3 are available for increased color grading flexibility, as well as Zebra functionality, Gamma Display assist and proxy recording. The camera can also record Full HD at 120 fps at up to 100 Mbps, allowing footage to be reviewed and eventually edited into 4x or 5x slow-motion video files in Full HD resolution with AF tracking.

No headphone jack.

No 4K 60P

No Dual Card Slots.

Yawn.

You'd think Sony and Canon would get a clue that Nikon and Fujifilm are and will continue to erode their market share in mirrorless because they don't have higher line products to protect.

It's a $900 entry level hybrid camera with HDR and LOG shooting profiles, and it has the same AF tracking module as the $4,500 Sony A9 camera, so it should have outstanding AF tracking in both photo and video modes. My guess is that it won't have rolling shutter issues like the A6300 has, so for a low cost beginners/vlogging camera it should be a great fit.

The a6300 is most likely in the top 5 of Sony’s most successful cameras. That one in 2016 was really impressive, but this one not so much (on paper). They are in a tough position though because the a7SIII (as we know) will have everything everyone is waiting for. Nevertheless, you can’t really complain for 900 bucks.

The A6400 4K video image is generated by oversampling the full sensor and it has no recording limit, which is a first for Sony hybrid cameras.

IIRC, the a6300 was Sony’s first camera that mentioned oversampling from the 6K sensor.

“Internal recording of UHD 4K movies is possible in multiple frame rates up to 30 fps and, based on the Super35mm recording area and effective 20MP (6000 x 3376) resolution, 2.4x oversampling renders greater detail and full pixel readout is possible, that is void of pixel binning, for higher quality imagery with reduced moiré and aliasing.”

I was referring to the no recording limit, which as far as I know was only enabled before through Sony camera hacks.

The rolling shutter is as bad as the a6300/6500. It's the same sensor I think

So what you mean is, it's not a professional video camera?

IMHO, ANY camera that shoots video is semi-useless without a headphone jack. Unless you never shoot dialog? 4K 60p, you have a point, but it's artificially crippled, the camera can do it, it's just Sony protecting more expensive cameras.

I don't think it's the same processor though. ( the real-time tracking AF that includes eye-AF, with an upgrade to Animal eye-AF in April likely requires a faster processor to work )

The A6500 uses the same sensor as the A6300 but has better rolling shutter performance due to a faster image processor.

A6500 and A6300 4K rolling shutter is exactly the same at around 39ms.

I used to be very annoyed when a headphone jack was omitted from cameras until I started using this little amazing Beachtek.

You'd think the HQ preamps and the low/high options (making it compatible with all kinds of cameras) are my favorite features, but I actually love being able to ride the headphone volume, ha.

I know it's another thing to add but the safety track is worth it when interviewing one subject.

just from the 1st few seconds of this video you can see the RS is awful

It's very jiggly unstabilized footage, but I'm not seeing any fast panning shots that illustrate RS.

There are many YouTube Vloggers that have the camera right now and so I'm expecting to see a few proper tests of the A6400 within a week.

The Shure VP83F LensHopper shotgun mic has it's own headphone jack along with it's own built-in recorder. ( you can record audio to both your camera and the Shure mic )

Also many cameras will output their audio via the HDMI connector, so if you use an external monitor that has a headphone jack you can check your audio through it.

I used to own that LensHopper in like 2013 - the one with the recording as there's a model that doesn't offer it - and really liked it (it was the second microphone I ever purchased after the NTG1), but better preamps became a priority after syncing audio got old real fast (same with the other external recorders I owned).

As far as monitors...same with the bulk and just ended up disliking them and only used them when absolutely necessary. Plus some monitors/recorders have a delay.

The Beachtek is one of the best things I've ever bought (as a DSLR/mirrorless guy) with the small fortune I've spent over 10 years (as many here).
