[h=1]Sony hints at a 4K-heavy CES 2014[/h]
Sony head Phil Molyneux has dropped some pretty hefty hints that 2014 will be the year of 4K for Sony, with its line-up for CES going big on Ultra HD.While last year saw plenty of Ultra HD TV sets shown off in Vegas, this year looks more likely to feature 4K camcorders, 4K smartphones and 4K laptops.
"We're [going] after the premium consumer out there," Molyneux told reporters at a briefing. "It's clear people will want to generate their own 4K content."
[h=3]But he wouldn't be drawn on exactly what kinds of products Sony has up its sleeve, saying that all will be revealed at CES.[/h]The year's biggest tech show kicks off in Las Vegas on January 6 2014, at which point all will become clear.

Well, the push for 4K will be big, for sure.... whether the consumer actually buys into it is another subject.

Phil Moyneux was canned. He no longer heads Sony. There's still probably lots of 4K stuff in the works though at CES and NAB.

Consumers bought analogue tv's, digital tv's, HD ready SD tv's, nearly HD 720p tv's, actually HD 1080p tv's, so why not 4k tv's?

Because there is no 4K content to convince the consumer about the superiority of 4K.
The rule of diminishing returns. HD content has been around for a long time before the HD TVs hit the consumer market.
The difference between sd and HD is astonishing.
The difference between HD and "4K" is not.
I've seen enough "true 4K" shorts and whatnot at festivals to wait a couple of years longer at least for the tech to mature...

you sound like a 20yo fanboy.

While you sound like the perfect professional.

Perhaps everyone can't, I've been able to go 4k for years now while getting paid. I don't find it difficult, and the only people I have ever encountered who do haven't put the time and effort into learning how to push the stuff around effectively. I'm convinced if they had their way we would still be shooting and mailing betacam tapes around the country.

Sometimes someone has to point put the annoyance of others. I took the job and am damn good at it! LOL

There is no doubt some people will buy 4k tv's.....some people bought 3D tv's as well.
The question is, with a crappy economy, will people be rushing out to replace their
1080p HD screen with a 4K set? I think it will be slow....manufacturers will start making
cheaper 4K sets and as people's HD sets die and they go to replace them, why buy another
HD set if a 4K one costs the same? But manufacturers don't want to wait until the current HD set
dies, they want them out there NOW, en mass, buying new 4K sets, and I don't think that will
happen. Many will wait until they actually need a TV set to upgrade.

A few love those old days with the heart, and head is not properly living nowadays as their future.

Classy... ;-)

I have no doubt that a lot of peeps have been "aquiring" "4k" and so forth.
"aquiring" is a long way from "finishing" and "4K" has only a (large but none the less)fraction of true 4K worth of resolution.
The true test is actually seeing the finished "4K" and comparing to a finished HD material.
From what I've seen so far the difference is negligible. While the resolution is higher the dynamic range, contrast, color rendition suffer (compared to some top notch HD or 2K material). And these are the things the eye "sees" before it gets to resolution. That's why IMO the tech has to mature where all aspects of the IQ not only the resolution are improved upon. The Red dragon is louded to be the bees knees but there is not enough material out there to tell... Nothing in 4K that's available and the Dragon HD footy looks, well, like HD ;)
