Been looking forward to this for a long time - ever since it did so well at Sundance. I have to say, I was kind of disappointed. For those who don't know, this is a movie about a couple of kids who make an ode to Rambo.
The "bad" kid was really good. I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes a big star. The "lead" kid was pretty decent as well. The problem was the screenplay. It was clear that the writer hadn't written a lot of screenplays. The character development was lacking (for instance, the french exchange student character, who's supposed to be the sort of primaddona, was really all over the place and you never knew where he was coming from). Also, quite a few themes got muddled together, particularly in the end, and it wasn't clear what the movie was about. But the *very* ending was satisfying. I just felt it could've been a lot more satisfying.
I have no idea who this filmmaker is or what he's done, but he exhibited a bunch of "newcomer" mistakes, so I'm going to assume this was his first gig. For that he did an okay job, but this movie could've been a lot better and is definitely not worth the hype it got from Sundance. Sometimes I feel like they go nuts over movies that just look professionally done.
