Something Different - 48V Lavalier 12mm Omni

I use and like. Maybe not for everyone but it solves several problems for me. First, it's durable, strong cord won't get easily yanked or accidentally unplugged. Second, 48V phantom, clean and powerful. Third, 12 mm body, though larger it still hides well enough but with large cavity, basic mechanical sensitivity is inherent. It sounds really good. The cord length for me is just right, hangs well from a lapel without noise from clothing, doesn't need to be too close, picks up the bride and officiant clearly, excess cord tucks below the belt line. And it's priced affordably. I plug it into a Zoom h4n Pro which hangs from a belt or waistband and form fits surprisingly well. You can get it from Amazon.

That resembles a Sony ECM-55, which is a good mic.. but HUGE by today's standards. I had ECM-55s for years and loved the way they isolated the wearer whilst retaining the desired omni characteristics. The 55 also run on Phantom Pwr;.. or a AA battery.
According to the specs, the Movo is even larger than the Sony's 10.6mm diameter. Hiding either in warm weather attire would be next to impossible.

The specs and size suggest it uses a Primo EM172 capsule. I have a few mics with these capsules, plus some of the bare capsules only (useful for binaural experiments) from the excellent FEL Communications Ltd. (in the UK): they also offer their 'Clippy' mic in a 48v phantom power version, along with various other options: https://micbooster.com/10-clippy-microphones. If you can get away with larger capsules, they certainly offer low self-noise compared to smaller lav mics, though, unsurprisingly, they don't perform as well as decent (e.g. DPA) lav mics for music recording.

Cheers,

Roland
