Someone should adapt this...

Not to make light of this because it may end with pile of corpses, but this story is begging to be written. It's "dog day afternoon" off the coast of East Africa. Be sure to click the video too and see scary Somali pirates with lovely purple sashes hiding their identities. . The Pirate Boss was interviewed by journalist yesterday on a variety of issues including what they eat. Here's the reply:

"rice, meat, bread, spaghetti, “you know, normal human-being food"

Bill Murray as the Pirate Boss.

quite seriously, it does have some fascinating dramatic potential, there are so many strange ironies, e.g. US and Russian warships cooperating, and the fact that the warship's full of weapons (tanks) which the pairates can't actually use, and the bloody infighting.

In real life, the ending is likely to be boring or sad:( but as a dramatic situation it's rather cool. Sadly, if it ever is made into a movie it would probably be a brainless actioner - "ex-Marine Brad Macho singlehandedly kills 400 pirates, while armed only with a plastic fork, an Ipod and an American flag, and saves hostage Gloria Bigboobs and her tapdancing dog Fluffy three seconds before a really cool bomb explosion."

I agree good story. But, in order to stand out it would need something unique. Like a polar bear.

Seriously, though, something unique...

I like that part too. Apparently the pirates didn't realize it was loaded with military hardware when they captured it. I'm sure the pirates weren't happy with that discovery. It's like one of those movies where the two goofballs accidentally end up with a suitcase full of Mafia money or contraband. "Oh no! They're gonna kick our butts when they find out we have their tanks!!"

Funny you mention this, i had been tossing the idea around of writing a story about modern day pirates after seeing this on the news, i wouldnt adapt this story exactly but i really like the concept of modern day pirates.

Its probably an idea i wont get to for awhile i got too many other projects on the list before it. It is definitely a interesting story and would make for an interesting concept if as mentioned you could avoid action movie cliches.

SOMALI PIRATE UPDATE: Our Somali Pirates are hemmed-in just off the Somali coast by 5 US Naval warships. The Pirates have loaded food and livestock on to the ship in celebration of an Islamic holiday of some sort. Their initial ransom demand of 35 million dollars went to 20 million and is now at 5 million. Meanwhile, a Soviet Destroyer is steaming towards the incident. The Soviet military is apparently known for its aggressive and brutal approach to hostage situations, a fact the Pirates are apparently aware of because the closer the Soviet Destroyer gets, the lower the ransom goes.

UPDATE:
There are now 6 US Naval Warships circling the hijacked ship. The Russian Destroyer Neustrashimy is still en route to the incident. An official from that Russian government said that Russia “Aims to prevent pirates from causing mayhem”. Note use of the word Aim.
