Someone managed to make a good movie using Zoom Conference Call

Major points for creativity and making lemonade out of lemons:

"It will make you jump, shriek and come up close to one of the most dreaded elements of quarantine: the group Zoom call. Now Host, the tiny British horror film conceived and made in lockdown, is being hailed as the first great film of the pandemic.

Its writers – Rob Savage, Jed Shepherd and Gemma Hurley – have fashioned a chilling 57-minute movie from a two-word text sent by Shepherd to Savage at 4.34am on 24 April. It simply read: ‘Zoom seance’. A group of six friends get together on the video conference call platform and, with the help of a medium who – of course – loses her internet connection early on, they call up the spirits.

What began as a prank borne from a WhatsApp quarantine film club with real-life friends ended up the subject of a studio bidding war. The finished result, which premiered on horror channel Shudder a fortnight ago, has created a viral sensation online. Cast and crew have been interviewed by breakfast TV in the US. A UK cinematic release is on the way. Evil Dead creator Sam Raimi has signed up to produce Savage and Shepherd’s next project."

This is the kind of thing where I admire the creativity, but know I'll probably have no interest in actually watching the thing. At a certain point, an aesthetic becomes removed enough from the things I love about cinema that it doesn't really interest me. I put Blair Witch, Paranormal Activity and more recently Searching in the same category. This also prohibits me from making something with a similar approach. It just doesn't excite me. But hey, it got all those guys careers, and I'm still here trying rub two sticks together to make a film, so what do I know?

That's the thing - getting attention is an artform in itself. Cameron turned titanic and especially avatar into cant-miss events. Starting with Lolita, Kubrick seemed to have a sensationalist marketing angle lined up for each of his movies at the treatment stage.

Most of the reviews of Host talk about how much this film is a reflection of the pandemic period. So, I think it speaks to our current predicament, possibly more than it exists as a good film in a vacuum. (Does any film exist in a vacuum?) I'm not going to see it because I'm not a big horror fan.

What was sort of cool is this idea seemed to grow out of a prank the director played on his friends during a Zoom call, splicing horror footage into his Zoom feed to make it seem like he was knocked unconscious by a ghoul in his attic: https://mobile.twitter.com/DirRobSavage/status/1252635448440225795

Sort of gets back to the primitive mode of filmmaking - fooling people into thinking there might be some truth to what they see. And scaring them with it

Yeah thank you for pointing that out, I didn't think about the ambiguity lol. If you edit the first post of the thread and Go Advanced, you can change the title of the post and thus the thread
 
I read the article and watched the clip. It looks pretty good. That scene reminds me of that funny scare trick that was popular years ago. Wow that trick is older than I thought 2006
 
I find it amusing that something like this is being held up as some kind of Hitchcock/Stephen King standard. It's clever, it's well planned and produced, but is the typical kind of university student movie I have always hated. It's a great simulation of Zoom, it's got the usual vacuous youngsters parodied to a tee and they've made a pretty good job - but the subject matter and presentation are just the movie equivalent of the low-fi audio fad. I don't want to watch Zoom meetings for the quality of the image and the quality off the sound, the inability to see detail and all the other defects these things have.

It's clever. It's no doubt brilliant to the type of people who watch it. I just count myself lucky I'm not part of that social strata. I can't imaging actually paying to watch it?

As far as I know this app is a modified version of WhatsApp and you can easily get info about this app on net because it is very popular app which I think almost all user's of WhatsApp are using.
