Someone give it to me straight...

Is there any place that I can get a DVX for a little less than $3300? I know about the "gray market" and EVS and everything, but has anyone bought one for less at another place and had a good experience? I don't want a warranty, I simply want what is supposed to come in the box. Also, what is the user discount at EVS, anyway?

I KNOW IT'S POSSIBLE!!!

Thanks...

No, I don't plan on breaking it and I will take my chances on it breaking on its own.

Also, what makes the authorized dealers (EVS) anymore respectable when they are charging higher prices than they need to?

Re: Someone give it to me straight...

Well, what makes them respectable is that they operate respectably: they do what they say they will, they don't lie/cheat/steal, and they charge one of the lowest legit prices in America for the DVX.

I think people just don't get this "authorized" idea very much.  Let me put it in the context of cars: there are "authorized" dealers (otherwise known as "new car" dealers) and then there are dealers that are not authorized to sell new cars.  When you drive down the street and you see a gleaming palace of car dealerships, with glorious shiny new cars covering the whole block, dozens and dozens of new Toyotas (for example), that's an authorized Toyota dealership.  Then when you drive by "5 Star Auto" or "Broadway Auto" and you see a bunch of used rattletraps next to a sign that says "We Finance Anyone", that would be an unauthorized dealership.

Toyota sells their cars to Toyota dealers, and to nobody else.  So what if "5 Star Auto" had a brand-new Toyota on their lot?  Would you buy it?  Would you trust them?  Would you wonder "how in the **** did you guys get a brand-new Toyota with zero miles on it... you're not a Toyota dealer!"

Well, the same thing happens with cameras.  Panasonic sells to Panasonic dealers, and to nobody else.  So when a place like Broadway, or CCI, or 5 star or etronics claims to have brand-new Panasonic cameras, you shouldn't be saying "boy oh boy what a deal", you should be saying "how the **** did you guys get that?"

So you could buy your Toyota (or Panasonic) from an authorized dealer, like B&H, with a camera store that occupies a half a block in NY:

Or you could buy it from a place that looks like this:

(that's the photo for 5 Stars Electronics).

You decide which one is more respectable...

Re: Someone give it to me straight...

But it would be possible to get a "grey market" camera that was 100% new and just like the one from B&H or EVS, only cheaper, at least a couple hundred dollars or so. That is the place I want to buy one from and I KNOW someone has done this successfully. A NEW dvx CAN be had for under $3300-3400...

Come on somebody...anybody.

There is nothing wrong with trying to get the best deal.

Re: Someone give it to me straight...

No, but there is something wrong with always following the smaller dollar signs.

Is it *possible*? Sure. Will you ever be certain? Not on your life.

If you're worried about a couple hundred bucks difference, I don't think you can afford to gamble $3000 on a place which "might" be OK. Because then again, it "might" NOT be.

Re: Someone give it to me straight...

But hey, if you want to take your chances with one of these Brooklyn Syndicate scam places, tell Walter we all said "hi," 'cause he's the only guy who appears to work for any of them . . .

Re: Someone give it to me straight...

No...I don't think anyone has successfully gotten a DVX for under $3300. These guys don't even have these cameras in stock like they say they do. To go along with Barry's analogy..

You walk into 5 Star Auto saying you saw they advertised the new toyota for really cheap in the newspaper...They tell you that they would like your credit card payment right away...so you give them your card...they charge it and they tell you the car will be delivered....it never comes....

You see for the time you spent waiting - 5 Star has already made a great deal of intrest on the money you gave them...You decide you want the money back because you realize after reading all the reviews on the company that people never recieve their cars..You get your money back and 5 star loads up on the intrest...

Nobody recieves cameras from gray market dealers...As good as it may sound...the saying "It's to good to be true" applies greatly here.

Re: Someone give it to me straight...

And, as a side observation, 5 Star Auto Mall, just down the street from me, just got put out of business for tax evasion. Spinning wheel goes round and round . . .

Re: Someone give it to me straight...

You don't need a DVX if you can't buy one from an authorized dealer...

Re: Someone give it to me straight...

Let me ask you this: HOW is it possible for an unauthorized dealer to sell for less than an authorized dealer?  You insist it's possible, but I have to ask: how?

Here's why: Panasonic ONLY sells cameras to authorized dealers.  If an unauthorized dealer gets a US-model, sealed-box, new-with-warranty unit, there's only one way to get it: from an authorized dealer, under the table.  Now, will the authorized dealer sell to the unauthorized dealer for less than his cost?  Never. That'd be stupid on his part.

So the unauthorized dealer is, logically and inescapably, paying MORE for the camera than the authorized dealer is!  Unless he's getting black-market stolen goods, or store returns or broken stock or something like that, the unauthorized dealer MUST be paying more than the authorized dealer.

No unauthorized dealer can sell for less than an authorized dealer can (note: that's CAN, not necessarily DOES... the authorized dealer may not choose to discount as much).  But he could, because his cost is lower, always, than the unauthorized dealer.

The unauthorized dealer cannot, EVER, offer a US-made, US-spec, brand-new DVX for less than an authorized dealer could.  And, from all the stories I've heard, they don't: they use the camera as a loss-leader, but they get you on the other side with overpriced "accessories", warranties, and overpriced shipping.  In the end, you may think you got more, but you will have spent more money than you would have through the authorized dealer.

Feel free to try to make an end-run around the system, but at least be aware of what you're up against.

Re: Someone give it to me straight...

True enough, Barry. The only -- ONLY -- non-authorized dealer I'd *ever* recommend (because I've done thousands of dollars of business with them and every transaction was smooth as silk) lists the 100A for $3995. And though they're non-authorized, they ARE reputable.

$3000 or less? I'd sooner recommend eBay.

That is the most ludicrous thing I have ever read.

Re: Someone give it to me straight...

I could have sworn I just read this same question in the marketplace forum.

That picture is scary! It reminds me of one of those haunted houses they have down on the boardwalk.

I agree with David. I think it is possible to get the DVX for cheaper, but your chances of getting screwed are greatly increased. And you have no idea where it really came from. Do you like to gamble? Because this might just be a $3000 slot machine!

Re: Someone give it to me straight...

That's the question though -- IS it possible to get it cheaper? I mean, forget all the "accessories" like the Digital Optics wide-angle lens and the Sakar battery and the Mack warranty. Throw all that out the window, and try to buy just the camera. It would seem difficult, if not impossible, to buy the camera (including shipping) from an unauthorized dealer for less than you could buy it from an authorized dealer.

The unauthorized dealer MUST pay more for it than the authorized dealer does -- (unless it's stolen equipment, or a non-US model that they import from outside the country). So if they're paying more for it, how could they sell it for less?

I still have never heard a case of someone buying a DVX for less than $3400 from an unauthorized dealer, by itself. I don't think you can.

Re: Someone give it to me straight...

..i dont get it..? if thats what your looking for, then you might as well call them up and buy it right now.. seriously. why sit here and debate about whether anyone should by from there or not.. if you know its such a good deal, then just buy it and proove everyone wrong as you laugh all the way to the bank cause you got such a good deal and everyone else who told you its a scam is so stupid.

Re: Someone give it to me straight...

Oh, I think I get it... Coltrain sounds like someone who works for one of those shady dealers and is trying to make us think he's a potential customer. ;)

I wish I was, then I would know the truth.
