some thoughts, the Andromeda device, external harddrives, the 100B ?

Hi, a few things on my mine. I like the Andromeda device but dont like how it has to be tethered to a friggin computer all the time. I like to shoot away from things like electricity and I also like to shoot handheld so this method wouldn't work. Have the andromeda guys thought about external HDD recording like on a Firestore ? Would that work or are the files sizes just way to big for external harddrives to handle at the moment. Also, anyone out there have this modification done on their cameras? How do you like the footage ?

-Lets play the guessing game. What new advancements do you think the 100B will have ?

thanks for playing

cheers

Andromeda doesn't have to be tethered to a computer. It can be connected to a USB drive. The device is essentially a computer that's installed inside the DVX. These questions might be better asked for the Andromeda guys themselves. They've got their own forum here.

And their main website for more information and stills.

It might work getting data to USB port, but due to have more lattitude, it should be a good idea to have the computer for a good look of what´s really capturing.

Just checked, and you do need to be tethered to a computer with andromeda. The first version they had was an external box that could connect straight to USB drive. But they seemed to have paired it down to an interface that fits within the DVX and needs to be connected to a computer.

They've stated that recording directly to a HDD would
"require different hardware than they are currently using"

Sort of a trade off of fitting all that proprietary hardware inside the camera; no D2D recording.
But, at least you could use your matte box or cinema lens adapter now...

I compare this to my DVRack (it's not 4:4:4 and all that, but...) where I have to drag around a laptop and a really long firewire cable. It works fine for me. It also doubles as a video village on the cheap.

Wouldn't shoot without it

The advantages are awesome but I like to be a free as a bird with my camera. No tethers. I guess this would work well if I had a solid script with a grip of good actors and excellent lighting design. The footage coming out of the Andromeda looks incredible. Hopefully after my warranty has expired on the 100a I will be able to do this mod and by that time they would have invented HDD recording. Is the andromeda essentially HD and does it maintain the 24p and 24pa qualities for FCP editing ?

Although dvMatte Pro is currently a workable solution for keying with dv, Andromeda's uncompressed format would seem to be a natural in this environment for pulling the best keys.

I would love to get some Andromeda key samples!

A lot of this kind of work is done in a studio setting where a tethered setup isn't really a big deal.
