Some technical questions

Shooting 30p on HVX, but in 480 mode. 480 is SD, and that always plays at 60i.... so really, 30p is recording 60 fields a second, except each field is identical... is that correct? So I actually still have 60 fields every second, except I do not suffer from interlacing artificats?

- Does this make the deinterlace filter useless here?
- Should/could I use the DVCPRO HD Frame Rate converter here to remove duplicate frames (fields)? Would this make the footage the same then as working with say, 720p30pn (except for resolution)?

Next question. An external calibrated monitor has traditionaly always been important when working with DV footage. When entering the all digital realm of HD and progressive footage (unless shooting 1080i) - but lets stick with 720p30p for 60p for now - when dealing with all progressive footage, is an external monitor as important as it used to be? Besides color space/title safe, is there anything else?

If so - for HD, I am assuming you need an HD calibrated flat panel screen?

I am looking for a good external calibrated monitor if still needed. I wanted one that would work with SD and HD - can this be done, or is it best to get two seperate monitors?

What product/brand would you recommend?

30p is two fields of the same footage...correct.

And yes, with HD you still need properly calibrated HD monitors...and you will also need an HD capture card as well. Flat Panel? Not necessarily. I have an HD CRT, but HD LCDs are fine too. Heck, they are the ONLY option still being made really.

My pics are in this order:
TVLOGIC LVM-240D - $7995
JVC DT-V24L1DU - $4695
Panasonic BT-LH1700 or LH2600
Sony LMD-2450W HD

OR you can use the Matrox MXO and Apple display option:

Why do I need an HD capture card? I import the files directly from P2, all digital. I have been capturing them for a while now.

Do those HD monitors work well for SD footage, or would it be best to have both an SD and an HD monitor?

Is there anything worthwhile that is cheaper, say, doesn't cost more than my camera or my computer? Dang!

ALSO:

You need an HD card to monitor the HD signal out of the computer. Without the card, you cannot monitor the signal. WIth P2, I tend to recommend the MXO/ACD option. Under $2k and you already captured your footage.

Those monitors work well for SD footage as well. The MXO/ACD doesn't really. Meant for HD. And it is the cheapest option out there, if you want BROADCAST quality monitoring. If you want just general monitoring, you can get the Decklink Intensity or Intensity Pro and an HD TV.

Deinterlace what? That camera shoots progressive.

And I never shot SD with that camera, so I can't answer that part.
