Some RED Footage graded and edited on FCP X

Before I mention how awesome that was I want to make the obligatory focus and shake comments.

Ok that is done. I really liked it. Was it random test shooting or was it for a purpose? The timing was good. The lighting was very minimal (I'm actually assuming it was available light) but it worked well for the tone of the piece. It looked like white balance for the indoor lighting was slightly off but I assuming that is from different kinds of lighting. That also fits with it looking more "real". The outside footage looked slightly over saturated in the skin tone and green in the grass and trees. Not enough to look bad but enough to make me ask was this a "style" or mistake.

How do you feel FCP X worked with your footage? Was it faster? Did you transcode to ProRes? Overall, like I said earlier, I really liked it. There is at once an uneasiness as of he is about to do something destructive but also a loneliness like he is longing for what "they" have and he does not. Good job.

Hey kgimedia - thanks for the feedback!

This was for the most part completely random test shooting.. There was no real creative structure at all, and it was mostly run n gun on the fly shooting which explains the focus/shake.. On the actual feature shoot, of course we will have a proper camera unit and planned shots, etc. This test was supposed to give us a general feel of one of our main locations and specifically how the colors would translate.

We had no lighting at all with us, and even on the real shoot we will be using minimal lighting for the most part. The over saturation was done intentionally.. I went a bit crazy when I started seeing how far you could push the RED's 12 bit color space. I typically like to give my projects fairly dramatic coloring.. and with red you have the freedom to try out some very unique looks.

As for FCP X I think it handled things exceptionally well. I used the ProRes4444 codec in full 4k and I couldn't have imagined things running more efficently and quickly. A big part of my day to day work often involves color correction for film and television projects and I have to say I am really starting to like the color correction tools in FCP X. Very simple, but gives you a lot of control by adding as many passes as you'd like. If it had OMF/XML support I would be editing the entire feature on it.. It would be colored in resolve and sent to protools or logic for audio work.. But unfortunately I'll have to cut the project in FCP7... Unless by some miracle the software is updated accordingly in the next couple months.

With that said, I did notice what I think to be a bug with FCP X and/or Compressor. On one of the shots I had used an FCP X filter to flip the image horizontally. For some reason on the timeline it appears flipped but in the outputted version it was not flipped. Very strange... I didn't have time to test out different settings, but it's definitely something to be aware of.

How are you liking FCP X?

I have been attempting to learn FCP X cold. With no tutorials or manuel. I am an expert with many different modern softwares and all but Apple Motion I have self taught. I did receive Official Avid and Pro Tools training in 1997 while in school.

I mention the above because my progress has been slow during a full schedule of FCP 7 editing and shooting. Even with these issues I love what I'm seeing. Some times I find myself stopping my "old way" brain and thinking how should this work, you know what would be the easy way. More often then not it works and it work instantly with a scrub preview if I am not sure. I have started my first real job with it. I hope to report here on the progress. I think it will be a fair challenge. All day event shot with 5DmII (standard Profile), T2i (Cinestyle, ML) and a HVX-200. My goal is to grade in FCPX and try to match these 3 different looks. I know it would take 12-14 hours with my old workflow. Hopefully I can match that with FCPX. The speed of the program should make up for my FCPX skill level. Then hopefully I can bill 16 hours but cut my times down to 6-8.
