Some really terrible test footage...

I went up to Big Bear on Saturday and shot a test scene with some friends for a short film I'm going to shoot in August.

The purpose of this was to just see what the footage would look like in this location, time of day, outside, etc. There's no audio and a lot of the camera work is really shaky. Also, the white balance is all over the place. I realize all this.

All in all, I hate it. So that's why I'm posting it here. I need some advice on better exposing my subject without making the background too dark. You can see in the 2nd shot that the actor's face is majorly blown out on one side. But when I tried to stop down enough to properly expose it, the shadowed parts of the image were practically black. I need to know how to find a happy medium here.

So apart from getting a reflector kit, (we're out in the mountains, so I can't use actual lights) what kinds of setting can I adjust on my actual camera (HPX170) to achieve more of a balance?

As of now, I'll go out and just open and close the lens and the iris and that's about all I can think of to mess with on the camera. Thanks for any advice on this.
