SORRY, THE PICS ARE HUGE!!

Materials:
1 round piece of 5ply play wood or particle board (24" wide)
    8-12 flat surface mount sockets
Light switch and box for switch
    heavy gauge wire
    extention cord
2 "c" brackets to bolt to back of wood and set on the stands.

BE VERY CAREFUL when wireing this. It might be best to refer to a wiring diagram or ask someone at your local hardware store.

I can send detailed instructions for wireing later

Make it look good, measure twice, cut once. You dont want to be on a shoot with crappy looking equipment. Paint it black and be sure to put at least a 3-5" openended cylinder of black firesafe material in the inner part of the ring (heaavy duty black wrap) to prevent light spill

good luck! I will have more on this later

Hi MattC

These are used by placing the camera into the 'Hole'. It appears High8's is rigged to be standing. You're lighting from the axis of the lens. This is something I am looking into building except mine will be more along the lines of the Kino Kamio.

Re: some pics of RING LIGHT

Hmmm... I believe I've seen one of these used during the making of a.. well a...

ehem... a quality adult film, er, I heard about it that is... But they used what looked like a circular florescent bulb, uh at least that's what I heard...

Ok, so now that I know WHAT it is, WHY would you use it?

Re: some pics of RING LIGHT

I have put it on a dolly while the "talent" follows the camera. To build or buy some thing like the Kino Flo might be costly. I think to buy is around 600-1000 dollars. I know that that circular blub and mounting piece is pricy. if you have the change and you can afford it then go for it. this ring light is just bigger and makes it easier to light the whole subject.
If you use the right bulbs it can make ugly people look pretty good. also puts a white ring around the subjects pupil, if you desire that effect.
in other words its totally worth the 100 dollars and has helped to make me more than 10,000 dollars already, still photography included. Ive had it for about a month

It's that magic glow look.  Give your talent that pop; that soft warm glow; shadows are softened; works well on the ladies.

I wanna get one on my DVX somehow for those handheld shots.

EDIT

Here MattC; this is actually from High8's thread in the frame grabs:

Re: some pics of RING LIGHT

wow.. that looks really good high8.

i know nothing about wiring things.. but instead of using multiple bulbs would it be possible to rig one of those bad boys with this:

Re: some pics of RING LIGHT

This is what I was thinking (Like KINO's). The key here is having a nice CRI and wattage of course. PErhaps it could be rigged to mount to the DVX ala the onboard crap mic?

Re: some pics of RING LIGHT

Cruz, where can one find one of those light rings and for how much?

Yes, John, having a nice warm effect to the light would be nice, which is why I'm leaning towards the afformentioned multiple bulb setup

It sure would and we use lights just like it, but called professional and a hundred times the price in the movies. And another option is a rig light that is really a square of small fluorescent fixtures.

Re: some pics of RING LIGHT

That grab of Mills definitely looks like it could be for a feature on Sports Center.

Re: some pics of RING LIGHT

You can buy those ring light bulbs pictured above at stores like Home Depot, Lowes, or probably even Walmart.

Re: some pics of RING LIGHT

bought one today, it was like 7 dollars. now to see if i can rig it.

Re: some pics of RING LIGHT

i think im going to make a version of this which i will declare the "LuzLight"!..

cut a circle out of sturdy cardboard, cut out a square in the middle for the cam, then glue/tape an shitload of christmas lights in a circle on the cardboard... plug those suckers in to the wall, put the cam through the hole.. and there you have it.. a LuzLight(tm)!

ps - spidey.. hows that rigging coming?
