Some Help masking out rain....

What I did was in a comp I added a video and above that I created a solid. In that solid layer I added CC rain. Next I create a mask in the solid thinking now all the rain will show only in the mask for the comp, well not exactly.

This is just a practice thing since I just started using this days ago. Am I approaching it wrong? Any help would be much appreciated.

Ok I figured it out.... Use an adjustment layer to add the effect and in that layer do the masking
