Hola,

Can someone please tell me the exact process of filming on 16mm? (I'm gonna sound really stupid asking, but who cares)

I'm confused because on a filmstock website they said you could buy filmstock processed or w/o processing. That made it sound like you buy film ALREADY processed... ??? huh? Do you buy the film, then shoot your movie, then get it processed, then get it telecined?

They made it sound like you buy film already processed before you film...

I'm kinda confused.

So is THIS the EXACT process of filming with 16mm: ??

1. Buy 16mm camera
2. Buy film stock
3. Shoot your film
4. Get film processed
5. Get film telecined
6. Edit on NLE

Sound right??

Also, What is the difference between single and double perfs? (i know that is the holes on the side of film... but what is the difference between 1 and 2 perfs?)

How do you know which film to buy? (Single perf or Double perf)

Thanks ALOT!!!

Colin

That's the process. Some places may sell you film and include in the price the cost of processing the film, but you would need to send the film back to them for processing once you had exposed (shot) it.

Single perf and double perf refer to the perforations on the side of the 16mm film stock. Single perf has perforations running down only one side of the film, while double perf has perforations running down both sides of the film.

If you are shooting Super 16, you need to have single perf film because the image goes all the way to the one edge of the film (where the second set of perforations would be on double perf film).

Once you decide what camera you are going to use, then find out if it takes single or double perf film. Newer cameras can usually use single perf, and very old cameras were designed to use double perf.

Hope that helps,

Dude.. thanks ALOT! And thanks for the quick response.

Okay, I bought one of them old K-3 which (I'm not sure if it was you) but someone said they didn't really like.. well it was a good lil starter cam.

I'm guessing since this was old, it's double perf, correct? I think...

So which Kodak film can I use (that is double perf)?

Also, when they process it, do they reprint your original footage onto new film stock?

Thanks

Colin
