Solution for removing hum and room noise

I recently posted looking for help to remove some bad air conditioner hum from the audio of a bunch of interviews I shot for the local United Way campaign in Kingston, Ontario. I was actually going to look for someone I could pay to take my wav files and clean them up. Someone suggested I try using SoundSoap, and I'm friggin' amazed on how well it isolated the hum, and left everything else sounding natural and clean.

It's always great when someone let's the forum know how well a solution worked or didn't for them. Thanks :)

Yes, thanks indeed.

Someone said SoundSoap was cr@p after I suggested it, and it's good to know that it worked out.

I don't think that SoundSoap (or most other noise reduction solutions) are magical or the preferred method of getting good sound.

That being said, they can often remove a significant amount of noise, and sometimes salvage material that would otherwise be unacceptable.

There is the $100 SoundSoap and the Pro SoundSoap. It is the Pro SoundSoap that is generally being referred to when recommended. I think the cheaper version probably is crap.

Cheers

Yeah, I have the cheaper version, and it is pretty much worthless for removing noise. However, I've ended up using it as a design plug in for when I want to seriously warp audio, and it has actually worked pretty well for that, so at least I didn't waste my money on it. I haven't tried the pro version yet, but I'm reluctant to spend money on it.

Well Dave and I disagreed on this in the above mentioned thread and I was talking about the under $100 sound soap. I have have very good results with it on some things . Glad it worked out for you. Now if your willing to drop a few grand on NR you can see some real miracles.

I'm glad you had better luck than I did with it. I found that it removed the noise, but also created too many artifacts in the dialogue to be useful. Maybe the stuff I've been getting has been too noisy for it. The audio I get is usually great, or some of the worst stuff you've ever heard. Like I said, I've found other uses for it, so I don't think I wasted my money. For $100, it's not a bad plug-in to have in your arsenal, just don't expect it to work miracles for you.
