I'm consulting for a company regarding the archiving of HD content - specifically, assets gathered by solid-state or HDD media (P2; CF; third-party hdd like FireStore).

If you have a moment, please let me know how much data you're acquiring on a monthly / annual basis?

Then, if possible, let me know how you're archiving. Down-rez to tape, HDD, data tape, DVD or other methods.

Thanks in advance.

Last year…

- Between 6 and 7 terrabytes of P2 footage filmed/captured
- Archived to 1TB and 1.5TB external drives
- Desperately looking for a better solution (LTO?)

Our primary concern is your primary concern. And the reason for the research.

I likely acquire about 6TB of footage per year - though less than half is solid-state. The rest is HDV (MiniDV) / HDCam / DVCProHD (VariCam inclusive).

Last year approximately 2TB on P2 and approximately 4TB on Red1 (well you did ask about solid state...) am archiving mostly on 1TB raid 1 sata HDD. Also am archiving on a 1TB raid 0 (2X500gb) would very much like a cheaper solution than LTO to be made possible.

How much solid-state do you produce per month / annually?

Well which one do you want answers for? Obviously the anual figure will be 12x the monthly, so which one should we use?

I shot around 3 TB last year. Archived to hard drives redundantly (all data backed up twice on different hard drives). Set one of the drives goes to the shelf. Set two of the hard drives goes off site. A third backup is created for clients who want the extra protection and pay a premium for it. The on-site drives are checked for data integrity every other year.

These are the precautions I've put in place to make up for the fact that I'm backing up to hard drives. I'm always looking for a better backup solution, but this is what I've developed balancing cost and risk.

Around 3 -5 TB a month. 90% goes via components straight to the Decklink (HD uncompressed) on a array. The rest is Firestore.
I use compression only if I absolutley have to.

Archiving is on swopable hard drives.

My poll is a bit confusing. I guess the easiest way is annually or we can extrapolate your monthly consumption too.

So far, it sounds like everyone is archiving only to HDD.

The company I'm currently at generates about 52TB of of raw footage a year. It used to be all tape-based but these days it might be getting closer to 50/50 and we will eventually be completely tapeless (or nearly tapeless) in the future. We have an xSan for online storage, an xSan for nearline storage, archiving of tapeless media happens to mirrored, 1TB HDDs. I'd prefer arching to data tape since HDDs are far from idea for long term storage but that's just not in the cards right now.
