Solid State HDD (oxymoron, I know)

Evil has Ears
SanDisk annouced this new product: http://www.tracyandmatt.co.uk/blogs/index.php/2007/03/13/sandisk_introduce_32gb_2_5_solid_state_d

Seems that it would not be difficult to create a P2 adaptor to connect to the HVX. The biggest concern would be if they put the same quality control as the P2 into what memory makes it final product. If SanDisk is aiming to replace the HDD of laptops, these things are going to have to be pretty damn reliable.

Hope someone with the technical knowhow is working on this.

Cheers

That explains the plethora of adapters that let you record to existing laptop harddrives, bypassing the need to purchase P2 cards and effectively syphoning off untold millions of dollars from Panasonic's coffers.

Uh... I think it would be extremely difficult to come up with an adapter of this sort... Your best bet is a cineporter that will accept SSD drives via SATA...

Well, I was directing that sort of request to a company like Specialized Communications for something more like the Cineporter and less like a laptop that would prevent run and gun.

I guess this "SSD" could just be swapped out with the HDD in the Cineporter but since you could skip the redundent RAID and cut back dramatically on power requirements it could theoretically be significantly smaller and lighter.

Also, unlike the bigger HDD capacities for the CnePorter, at 32gb (to start) this "SSD" would need to be swapped out regularly so it would need a more swappable design then the Cineporter.

I guess I was thinking of something not quite P2 and not quite the Cineporter. A Frankenstein in between the two.

Just throwing ideas out there...

CinePorter could probably use this. Question is -- why would you? 32GB P2 cards are supposed to be on the market for under $1,000 by the end of this year, so why buy the CinePorter hardware for $2300 and a 32GB SSD for $350 ($2650 total) when you could have three P2 cards and perpetual hot-swap capability, plus no external hardware?

The key thing here is that SanDisk will probably sell a hundred million of these, versus Panasonic selling a hundred thousand P2 cards, so the pricing is quite attractive.

So if someone (hint, hint, Spec-Comm) were to design a "P2 Sheath" that this little drive could snap into, and sell that P2 Sheath cheaply, then that would be awesome; we could take advantage of the presumed rapid escalation in size and plummet in price that will likely accompany a mass-market item like these SSDs. I wonder if it'd fit? Probably not, I think a 1.8" drive is probably wider than a 54mm P2 card...

2 inches = 50.8mm's

Spec has mentioned that they would have to sell something like this at a pretty high price point in order for it to justify the cost of them developing one. But, maybe some of the technology is there with the cineporter now, and it won't require as much 'new technology', so to speak
