Solid-color skin

There's this effect in music videos that's hot right now and I REALLY want to do it. It's when they flush the artist's skin complexion to make it one solid color. Like all red or all blue. I tried it once by just putting someone under a green light bulb and as you could imagine, it quite didn't work. I'm trying to find a gaffer that can give me this effect, but I don't even know how to ask for it. If it's possible for me to do the effect myself, could someone please be kind enough to explain how? Thank you SO much, God Bless!

You can find the effect in these popular videos:

-Jamie Foxx ft. T-Pain - Blame It

-Bow Wow Ft. Jermaine Dupri - Roc Da Mic

Looks like they shot it under a red light and there may be some digital enhancement in post to push the reds. Your trick would be to get your light source bright enough while keeping it red enough to get a decent image, if that makes sense. A store-bought red bulb wouldn't be enough.

Another option would be to try some in camera adjustments like Chroma Phase if you have that capability.

I did watch more of the video and noticed the reds were mixed with some contrasting blue light in places, which led me to believe it was done entirely on set.

I would look at theatrical lighting, or maybe ask some DJ's or event people how to create it. It may be doable with a gel over a light, but you're probably looking at a 2K watt light or more. I'm just guessing, though.

Wow.

I guess that's what happens to music videos when there is no budget these days.

That video looks like ****. For an artist like Jamie Foxx, and all the talent in the video they couldn't even get a real cinematographer and camera in there? Looks like someone who used a 5D Mark II for the very first time ever. So wiggly and shitty looking. Not at all slick.

Didn't Hype Williams used to make music videos that were worth a damn?

As far as the lighting: Put some seriously thick party gel on a par 64 and key the talent from 3/4 rear. Maybe what you want is a Color Wash LED since that will have all the color in one part of the spectrum, and completely mash everything else down.

No Fill Light.

Use a 5D Mark II with contrast cranked all the way up, and some other shitty picture profile settings and boom - you'll be there.
